From what was explained to me, this festival is one of the largest and most exciting in Korea.
My school is organizing a weekend trip for their teachers to go to the festival. Everyone will be leaving Saturday July 14th.
My girlfriend and I will be arriving in Korea July 12th or 13th. I'm thinking jumping right into one of the largest festivals in Korea during our second day in Korea might be a little too much to take in. We will still be getting over the initial culture shock of being in Korea.
On the other hand, it would be a good chance to meet the other teachers from our school (something like 35-50 of us will be going) and get to know some people.
Personally, we are thinking of sucking it up and just going. After all, we are here to experience another country and enjoy ourselves.
What do you guys think? |

If you like crowds, noise, overpriced accommodation, and an atmosphere reminiscent of American 'Spring Break' at Daytona Beach, by all means go.
I wouldn't exactly say that the Mud Festival is representative of 'traditional' Korea. If you're looking to meet other foreigners, I suppose that's the place to be. |

It's also a good place to meet drunk white frat boys who go "whoop whoop" all the time. It's such a wonderful sight to behold.

yeah...my wife and our friends went CRAZY over it. I didn't really think it was all that great. A few too many foreigners for my liking and, call me an old fuddy duddy but I find this:

| Don't over think it. Go. It'll give you at least a years worth of memories in 24 hours. Especially if work is paying, why would you say no? It's a good way to bond with your new co-workers too. |

WHAT!!! where did you do???
mud festival is nothing like spring break!!
go to the mud festival if you have never been!
its something to do once you are in korea..
I did it once.. had more fun the other 3 times I went back to daechan beach with my friends the same summer with out the bus load of foreigners all acting like retards and walking around smashed with no respect for the locals! |

That's what I'm talking about. Some truly appalling behaviour was on display when I was there, far worse than the run-of-the-mill stupidness you find in Hongdae or Itaewon on a Saturday night. God forbid you're married, or have small children. The atmosphere there wasn't exactly what I would call 'family friendly.' That being said, it didn't deter a lot of Koreans from bringing their kids to witness public displays of drunkenness so severe, that in any other country the subjects in question would be thrown in the cooler.
Be they teachers or military or tourists, there were truly some world class d!ckheads and d!ckheadettes on display for all to see, that made me never, ever want to go back to Daechon during that zoo. |

I just arrived home from spending the day in boryeong. I am definately going back next month too see the festival. Hotel prices are going to range from $100 to $150 or more if anyone wants to know. It's a very nice place with lots of seafood restaurants in front of the beach. I just wish koreans would cater more to foreign tourists and put menus in english!  |

To be fair...those guys and gals are from my town and they are nice people.
And there is a photo competition taking place at the festival, so quite a few pictures are "hammed" up and encouraged by the photographers.

| when i went in '05, it was alot of fun, even by myself! maybe it was the day that i went, but i saw way more koreans there than non-koreans (and it's not all that easy to tell, since everyone's mud-gray). the old folks jumping and playing around in the water like little kids still makes me smile! and it was the first time i'd seen soccer played on the beach before. maybe i've been too sheltered in my life? as for the drunks, the only obviously drunk person i saw was some nut sitting on the window sill of his hotel room up a few floors. a few people on the street (all korean) and i were trying to convince him in korean and english to go back inside so he didn't fall, drunks not known to have the best balance... |
