I went to a hair salon and told them that I wanted highlights. They looked really confused. When I tried to explain it they got even more confused.

My hair is very dark brown and I just want some lighter highlights in my hair. You know, the "I've been going to the beach and swimming pool a lot" look. I don't want any miscommunication. The last thing I need is bleach blond hair.

Is there a term or phrase I could say that the hair stylists would be like "Ok! I understand!"

하이라이트를 해주세요 would be more appropriate.

I said: 하이라이트를 해주세요.

They said 에?? 카라? 어떠캐 할래요?

Well, I didn't think I had to explain the actual technique for highlights. I assumed you said highlights and they just highlighted your hair. If I want streaks, then they would streak my hair. If I wanted frosting, then they'd frost my hair.

I guess what I mean is, after I say I want highlights, what should I say next to tell the stylist what I want?

All I want is a few highlights to make my hair a lighter. The "I've been to the beach and the pool a lot" look.

Have you tried a different hair salon?

The only other advice I can think of is the old adage:

"A picture paints a thousand words"

Take a photo or magazine with you and tell them to make your hair like hers.

also, i would suggest x 해 주실래요?
for example, when i get in a cab i never tell them to take me somewhere, i open the door and and ask x 가 주실래요? usually the driver agrees and i get in the car and then we party.

Bring a picture... just grab a magazine and rip out a picture of the hair that you want. Or go to a salon that caters to foreigners so that you can explain in English.

I can't remember if you said your hair is dark brown or light brown. You could try a hilight kit from a drugstore too... and if it gets fucked up, just re-dye the whole thing.

WHere do you live? Surely there's a stylist who speaks English nto that far away. Someone will be able to tell you where to go.

Negative ghostrider. The pattern is full.

I live in Gimpo. Not too many English speakers out here. I'll try a couple more places. I think I'll take a picture with me too.

If you live closeby perhaps I can be of service! Twisted Evil

Hehe, just joking... seriously, do Koreans do highlights?? Think highlighting might be more of a Western thing cuz I had the same problem as you, looked around Korean salons with no success. Luckily I know how to highlight hair and instructed a friend to do my hair for me, and it turned out just fine! Smile

Maybe you can ask a friend to help you highlight your hair?

There's really no difference in saying 모모모 가 구세요 and 모모모 가주실래요, that's not the problem here.

i would say the word it's 염색, but that also applies to dyeing your hair.
my suggestion is to take a picture, and say something like "이렇게 염색 해주세요".
