There is Korean legislation which states that New Zealanders (and some other foreign nationals) who work at public schools and universities are exempt from paying income tax in Korea for two years.

My school is asking for a 'residence certificate' presumably to prove I am a tax resident of NZ, in order to qualify for this exemption.

Surely there are other Kiwis out there who have faced this situation.

If you have been fortunate enough to navigate through this minefield and get to the exemption on the other side, what did you do? What documents did you provide? IRD has nothing about this on their website and so far haven't replied to any emails.

All I did last year was go to the New Zealand embassy and asked for a proof of residency. They give you a this piece of paper, you take it to the school, they copy it and then they should not tax your salary (save the medical and pension). IRD in NZ has nothing to do with it.

My school has done this for me but I didn't need to provide anything, maybe they'll ask a few days before the end of my contract.

I wouldn't like to have to pay New Zealand tax rates on my income here.
