Sorry if this has been covered before. I couldn't find it.

I am an idiot, and I didn't renew my passport while I was in Korea. Now I am back in the US, and want to renew it so I can go back to a new job (hopefully within the month). However it seems like it will take me 3-5 weeks to get it renewed, best case scenario.

My passport expires April, 2008. My contract would end July or August 2008. So that's like 9 months with the working passport. I think I remember reading that the passport has to last past the visa (though now when I need the info I can't seem to find it).

I'm pretty sure that it is a no go, and I'll just have to wait.

But pppppplease someone tell me I'm wrong. I like being back and all, but nothing to for like 2 months? I'll go crazy!!

Um....

Well, thanks for the bump, I guess.

It's an honest question, and I don't think it is all that stupid. Like I said, I imagine I can not, but I am hoping that it is somehow possible.

And I'm a pretty great kindy teacher. I shudder to think that someone as needlessly nasty as you teaches children.

Your passport has to be valid for at least 6 more months to get a VISA issued to you. When you do get it renewed, just go down to immi and they will transfer the VISA to the new passport. I think it's free, but if not it's probably pretty cheap.

KPRROK

PS - I don't think it's a stupid question either, unless I'm missing something.

I recently had a problem transferring my visa to a new passport. Although it was smooth as silk in Seoul awhile back, in the smaller city I am in the guy blew me off at first , asking me to take both passports to the airport. Finally , he stamped something in my new passport and gave me his name and telephone number in case there was a problem getting back in.

Let me tell you:
My passport is expiring august 17th. I re-signed in february. Immi said they can only issue an E-2 for that passport which means that THAT passport and my visa BOTH expire on August 17th. When I get a new passport, I need only get an extention on that visa.
That's what they said to me.

I'm not renewing or anything so I won't be able to confirm this.

wtf? i asked a legitimate question - how on earth did you graduate from college which entails reading books and reference material and yet you cannot manage to navigate the internet enough to locate a passport website and either (1) find the information pertaining to your situation or (2) contact information for the EXPERTs (who do NOT belong to this forum) who can answer your question in an appropriate manner

oops maybe it's because you KNOW your passport's expiration date says it all - which may be also the mistake of whoever issued your visa (they should have caught it and gave it back to you so you could renew your passport first) but the ultimate responsibility is yours since it's your passport.

and i might remind you - you yourself pointed out your own negative self-image - if you don't want people to think of you that way then don't do them a favor and call yourself an idiot

and i wonder just how "great" a teacher you are if you cannot even lead yourself to an authenticated source, how on earth are you going to lead a child?

teaching is about leading responsibly and encouraging growth; it is NOT about coddling a person's self-doubts

so there now - after you thought about it - i bet you learned something, huh?

don't be so quick to call the teacher nasty just because she pointed out something you should have already known. Cool

Cousin Larry, I just got my new passport in the states and it took fourteen weeks to get it back. The passport agency is really backed up, so if you do it here you should probably pay to have it expedited.

I think you are confused by my simple post. No one has issued me a visa. I can not understand your confusion. Please re-read my original post.

Well, thanks a lot everybody (except for one guy in particular). I really do appreciate it.

Moosehead- It's a legit question. I just got home and all of a sudden it seemed like I had to stay a lot longer than I was planning on. This is bad for me moneywise (I don't want to spend all my money on doing nothing in the states), and timewise (I need to be back next year in August to start grad school, which money from Korea is enabling me to do).

I was on hold with the US passport service this morning for over two hours. Then I immediately started searching every avenue for an answer to my problem, and yes, Dave's was part of that search. I was looking for a quick, reliable answer, and Dave's does quick well, and reliable on occasion.

If you have a problem with people asking questions on Dave's that have answers that can be found elsewhere, you better get off now, cause that's 90 percent of the content here.

Also judging by your join date and the time you posted your response (about 6AM Korean time) I am quite sure that you are in Canada right now. (My recent join date can be explained by the fact that I am a sock for a established poster, and I don't want people who know who I am to know my personal business)

I have been in Korea for a year. Now I certainly don't know everything, but if you have any questions, I'd love to help you out. That's what Dave's is for.

Moosehead is a good beer, and Candians are usually pretty nice people, but you sir, are a twit.

When you call the passport agency try not pressing anything, the option if you don't have a touchtone phone. For some reason you get through a lot faster this way.

first you say you are back in the u.s. and now you say you 'have been in korea for a year'

which is it?

and you think your first post was so simple?

here, i timed it for you:

in less than 5 minutes i found this website and the following:

http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/renew/renew_833.html

>>>Some countries require that your passport be valid at least six months beyond the dates of your trip and/or have two to four blank visa/stamp pages. Some airlines will not allow you to board if these requirements are not met.>>>>

while some really foolish types might venture a call to their korean embassy to see if a visa will be issued with a passport soon to expire, and accept a "yes it's ok" this same person might be a bit dismayed if they run into trouble later

WHY CHANCE IT???

why are you arguing over something that's so fundamental to working overseas? your own personal deadlines have nothing to do with it, own up to what you have to do and do it.

furthermore:

(1) i'm in seoul

(2) i'm not a "sir" but female

(3) i'm not the one who still doesn't seem to comprehend the importance and meaning of an expiration date on a passport, btw, many of the job descriptions on dave's mention having a current and valid passport which, duh might give one a really big clue.

calling me a 'twit' only reinforces the fact you are somewhat lacking in professional skills -

wow come to think of it you might fit right in over here Very Happy Very Happy

Whoa...chill.

I don't know why I'm allowing myself to get angry about this, but you are so confused it is infuriating.

The info you found after your search does not answer my question at all.

I urge you to take another five minutes, and look at my OP. Wait...don't even do that- just look at the title. It says it all. I have a current passport. It expires in 9 months, which is before a 1 year contract would finish. You simply do not understand my question.

You really seem to have decided that I see Dave's as the answer to all problems. I've made it quite clear that I don't. I thanked the other posters for their input, not for solving my problems once and for all.

I taught for a year in Busan. Now I'm back in the US visiting my family and friends. I am going back to Korea. Do you understand now?

I have been unerringly clear about everything. Either you have not bothered to read my words, or you lack the comprehension skills to understand even the simplest of questions. You just wanted to insult me.

Read this whole exchange again. Then ask youself, "who is the jerk here?" If you still think it's me, then I feel sorry for you.

The problem here is that you are WRONG! Your passport must be valid for 6 months past the date of the VISA issue, not the full year. If issued a VISA in this case, you must renew your passport before it expires (not hard and doesn't take long in Seoul for Americans I've heard) and get the VISA transfered to the new passport. This is done by a short trip to immi with the old passport (which you do need so don't forget to request it from your embassy), your new passport, your ARC, contract and I think a nominal fee.

I've had co-workers do exactly this, and it's no problem. True, your VISA and ARC will expire on the day your passport expires, but they will issue you a VISA and will extend your stay once you get your new passport.

The only advice I have to the OP is that once you get to Korea with your new VISA, get your ARC ASAP, then apply for your new passport as soon after that as you can. Get it done quickly and don't wait to the last minute.

Does this clear things up moose? Got it through your skin into that brain of yours now?

KPRROK

PS - feel free to apologize at any time for your arrogance in thinking you had all the answers and we were all wrong when in fact you were wrong.

PSS - the immigration site is down for maintenance right now so I can't get the link to the answers for you. I guess we'll just have to wait until tomorrow for the proof.

Thanks kprrok. I really do appreciate it.

Moosehead, you are nothing but a troll. You admitted it yourself. I won't be checking this thread again, because you piss me off so much.

You are a sad little girl who takes joy in others problems. I hope you are fresh out of college- if you are any older and you act like this, than you should really be ashamed. No- you should be ashamed whatever your age. It's embarrassing.
