Wow! How about those shotglass sized cans of soda!

And has anybody had that rice water? I did and I thought it was crap. But aloe vera juice is nice. And Korean orange juice rocks!

Just cuz they make such large servings in North America doesn't mean that you need or necessarily want it all. Frankly, the little cans are better in the long run. I wish we had them in Canada. In fact, I like the smaller snack servings in general.

I just don't understand why they need so much damnned rice with every meal.

Haha, it does seem like they eat about ten pounds of rice with every meal. And yet they stay skinny...maybe carbs aren't so bad after all. And yes, a half gallon of Coke with every meal is freakin rediculous. I'm only saying that I found it pretty novel that the vending machines serve up...what...maybe five ounce? cans of soda.

Heh. Some things are done differently here. Have you noticed yet that you're expected to take off your shoes at the door? Wild! Wink

As for "maybe carbs aren't bad," well, no shiat. You gain weight by eating too many calories; this can be a caloric surplus created by carbs, fat, or protein. Diet trends are really, really just silly but that's neither here nor there wrt the thread.

All calories aren't created equal. As a chemistry/nutrition and exercise physiology major, we spent countless hours reading through studies and performing our own to support this.

Glycemic index (basically how quickly a certain carbohydrate is converted in blood glucose, creating the insulin response) and biological value of proteins (think of it as usability of a protein based on its amino acid profile) are used extensively to judge the overall health benefits of food. We already do this quite overtly with fats, judging them on their chemical qualities of being saturated or not, and now being poly- or mono-unsaturated, making them easier for your body to break down and use for energy.

If you needed 2000 calories per day, and ate all 2000 of those in a single sitting of rice, you're correct that in the short term you wouldn't likely lose or gain weight, but you would experience a body composition shift, as those surplus calories of that meal are unable to be used, and instead stored as fat for later use. Unfortunately, our bodies don't just turn to those same stored fat calories immediately later in the day when we're not eating...instead they will turn to proteins stored in our cells and muscle.

Over the long run, continuing to do this will lower our metabolism (muscle is a driving force of metabolic rates) so we WILL have a net gain in mass.

Bottom line: Never skip the carbs or fat (a la modified Atkins), and make sure you're getting a balanced meal with every meal. Mix your proteins, fats, and carbs to keep your body happy and healthy.

Yadda yadda, glycemic index vs. glycemic load, pancreatic response, glucagon yadda, gluconeogenesis and ketosis, humma humma basal metabolic rate. At the end of the day, a calorie is a calorie. The relative healthfulness of these calories is different, but as noted, the weight will be the same.

Rice eaters are a majority in the world. The question is, 5 Billion people are wondering how the other 1 billion can just eat bread with every meal.

Personally, I like to mix it up. I'll eat rice some days. Other days I'll make a sandwich. And other days I'll cook up some noodles. Oh yeah, some days I'll just eat greasy fried chicken. Yum...

8,000 won for not from concentrate? That does not rock.

I want not from concentrate and extra pulp for $2.50 like I got
at Wal-Mart in the US.

Maybe you are talking about
some kind of Korean orange drink.

Korean servings (especially sugary carbonated beverages) are probably closer to what you should have at one time anyway.

Compare the plastic bottles in the US to the original coke bottle size.
