The Koreans did a first rate job with the summer Olympics few years back. Salzburg doesn not deserve it so the choice is between Sochi and Korea. I go Korea. |

I'm stuck on the summer olympics a few years back...
A few years...try 19 years!
I'm not big on the winter olympics, so I don't have a favorite one way or another.... |

Despite Korean's lack of effort on local things, Koreans are high quality when they host international events. |

Um, has anyone gone skiing in Pyeongchang? It's not so great. The runs are short narrow, and the snow's pretty terrible, also.
I'd be all for another olympics in Korea, but the Pyeongchang mountains are nothing compared to the Rockies or Alps. |

I was wondering about that. I've yet to see a decent sized mountain for skiing. Certainly nothing that I would consider world class or usable for a world cup event. |

Salzburg is a lock... regardless how many CNN ads the other two cities may pay for.
I suspect that Sochi is using the nomination to promote tourism in Russia whereas Pyeongchang seems to seriously think it has the best facilities to host a winter olympics. |

Personally I hope that Pyeongchang doesn't get the games.
I think that the unsporting nature and xenophobia that prevails in Korea flies in the face of what it is the Olympics stand for.
Despite having two enormous international events in the past 20 years, visitors here are still faced with problems which have more in common with third world countries ("Global" ATM's, Internet booking problems etc), than with the carefully constructed image of Korea Sparking.
It seems that rather than using these type of things to springboard their country onto the world stage, Korea prefers to use the opportunity to project an unrealistic image of themselves to the rest of the world before giving each other a pat on the back for being "globalists" |

I would hope that landing an Olympic bid would do for Korea what it has done for parts of China. Get them to sit up straight, keep their elbows off the table, etc.
From what I've read and heard, there were some major social changes that occurred nearly overnight before the '88 games. Korea's about due for another Matrix-style uploading of global manners, i.e. "I know pedestrian etiquette."
"Show me."
That would be a good thing for expats living here in the years ramping up towards, and after the event.
On a lighter note, several Korean coworkers were absolutely SHOCKED when I informed them the vote for the 2014 bid was coming up in a day or so. They were absolutely convinced that the decision had been made over a year ago.
I guess the candidate city font on the signs didn't quite get the message across that it was still up for debate. |

i was thinking the same thing. they would have to do alot of construction on the runs, but at least half of the snow would be fake snow and who wants to race on that? |

I'm cheering for Korea to get it...
Would give a facelift to a lot of parts and would get the locals very excited.. |
