So I was in Songtan the other morning running an errand and I see the sign on the front of the door ... "Subway will be closed for good. Thanks for your support."
I was a bit gutted. It was hands down the best Subway sandwiches shop in Korea. Does anyone who lives in Songtan know why it closed? |

I had a Korean friend once tell me he didn't like Subway because it was "greasy". He then suggested we eat samgyupsal for lunch. |

I have noticed that's kind of Koreans pat dismissal of foreign food. "It's greasy." Jja jang myeun (or is it ja jjang myeun?) is good and wholesome. Chinese noodles with black bean sauce is greasy. |

Can we stick to the topic? I don't give a toss that Koreans think it's greasy, don't like it or any other bullsh!t about Koreans and greasy and not liking sandwiches. All I want to know is if anyone knows why the fuking shop closed. The end. |

Were they getting any business at the new location? Seemed kind of dead the few times I took a peek. |

I found the opposite ... was always fairly busy when I went. It's too bad. |

Yes, I get that too. My wife won't eat anything with butter in it, or with a cream sauce. It's greasy, she says.
But she loves Sam gyeop sal. |

I went out with some coworkers a while back and they wanted to eat duck.
K-teacher: "Do you like duck?"
Me: "No, too greasy and too much cholesterol."
K-teacher: "Duck doesn't have any cholesterol."
Me: "Are you kidding, it has a lot of cholesterol."
K-teacher: "But Korean people don't think it has any cholesterol."
I just gave up after that. That's always the killer "But Korean people think..." |

For a quick diversion from topic: the Koreans I've taken love Songtan Subway (save my wife who has eaten Subway in America and knows how the subs are supposed to taste....)
Why did it close? I would wager that it has to be purely for economic reasons...after all, there'd always be someone to buy the shop if the owner decided to pack it up.
Yes, they were a bit more busy (at times) compared to the old location, but then again....location location location. I'd wager the monthly rent was/is much more for Spot B than Spot A (purely due to location and, well...size). I don't think the increased (if any) traffic was enough to cover the additional costs of rent.
Oh well...going to Songtan tomorrow...guess BK gets the vote. Bugger.
!shoosh,

What did I say earlier ... I don't give a flying fuk about what Koreans think about grease or cholesterol. If you're not going to comment on the topic of the fuking thread and attempt to hijack it into another "Koreans this, Koreans that" bit of rubbish, shut up and go elsewhere.
Ryst, thanks for the reply. |

I'm so sad! That was one of the best Subway's in Korea I'd found! The other one is in Yongsan Base, so not exactly easy access. Boo. i will never understand why they keep closing! The Subway here in Bucheon closed over a year ago, yet everything is still in the shop. It's so weird! |

a lot of western chains don't do well here. i don't know if it is because koreans don't like bread, don't like slower food, or just don't like high prices.
i think subway is a little on the expensive side, but i still go there. popeyes is a fast food chain that isn't doing well, but bk and mcdonalds are doing fine. |

The Subway in Yeouido isn't bad. I have a freind that just took over as the head of Subway Korea and they have tons of problems. (He is supposed to fix them). I'm guessing if he does a good job, you'll see alot more subways in the next two years. If not they'll be gone... not the ones on the military bases but the other ones.
Some one is working on it, Just hope they can get past all the problems that the company is facing here. They might even end up doing a reboot for Korea. You know shut down all subways then wait a year and reopen them all on the same page. |

Subway closed cuz their sandwiches are like 2 slices of deli meat, a crap ton of vegetables and condiments, all in between 2 pieces of cardboard.
Stuffy's, Quizno's, Blimpie's, Jersey Mike's, Arby's, Panera Bread, etc... all have better sandwiches. |
