When you say things like "I win," then yes it is a biggest-knob thing.

Don't worry, I wasn't insulting your manhood.

And do you kiss your mother with that mouth??

No, I don't.

edit: Since I've detracted from this thread, here's something to get it back on track:

http://www.mapsofworld.com/korea/korea-exchange.html
Quote:

The currency followed in South Korea is South Korean won (KRW). It has been the currency of South Korea from 1962. Earlier won was divided into 100 jeon. However, it is no more used now. The origin of the currency Won is the same as the currency of China (Yuan) and the currency of Japan (Yen). These three names have come from the Chinese character ? that means circular shape. The first coins which were circulated in 1966 were made of brass in denominations of one, five and 10 won.

Coins are found in denominations of 10 KRW, 50 KRW,100 KRW and 500 KRW. The notes are found in denominations of 1000KRW, 5000KRW and 10,000 KRW. There are talks going on in South Korea to issue 50,000 and 100,000 bank notes in the next two years. The 10,000 won note is the highest valued bill. For large transactions 100,000 won bank cheques are used and given out by ATM'S.

The present Korea exchange rate s are
1US$=928.75 KRW
1AUD=777.83 KRW
1 British Pound=1858.7 KRW
1EUR(Euro)=1261.8 KRW
The 10,000 won note is the highest valued bill. For large transactions 100,000 won bank cheques are used given out by ATM'S.

Some new changes have come about in the bank notes. The Bank seal has changed from red circle to a square ,color same as the color of the particular note. Moreover, the Bank's name printed on the backside of the note has changed from "The Bank of Korea" to "Bank of Korea". Some security measures have also been introduced on the bank notes like the introduction of EURion constellation on every bank note. Previously it was applicable only for Series V 10,000 won notes. Now on there will be color changing holograms for 5000 and 10,000 won notes.

Those checks - you just get them from an ATM and use them like cash, right? Or what? I'm gonna take a wad to the airport and change it there and 100 checks would be great.

A buddy of mine took eight million in cash to the airport and had no problem. When you cash the cheques, the teller will want to see id and take info like where you live. I have no idea but, if you're leaving the country, there could be problems.

Anyone cash out at the airport using cheques?

I had used a Visa debit card for years before I came to Korea - I think I was the first kid on my block to have one. I spent a large part of my life with no cash on me save a US $50 bill that I had folded into a little square and hid in the corner of my wallet to use only in case of an emergency. I put the bulk of my cash in my US bank account into a CD before I left for Korea.

Ahhthe good old days of living in a place with a modern, accessible banking system. As a foreigner, do you know where I can get a card like that?

I got a supercheck card from KEB. Its like your usual visa checkcard. Except you can't use it internationally.

One reason is that smaller bills make it difficult to conduct large cash transactions (i.e., illegal).

haha I've heard that theory and it makes me laugh every time. I tried to explain it to a few friends and family back home and they were completely flabbergastinationed. No wonder the US has so much corruption--those damn 20 dollar bills!!!!!!!

What theory makes you laugh? Most illegal enterprises deal in cash and they must have a way to launder it, (get back into the system so that it appears to have been generated legally.) That way they can invest it in legitmate things like real estate. Trying to buy a house or car with cash will generate a lot of unwanted attention from the authorities, something criminals try to avoid.

None of that has to do with denomination size. Cash is cash. If I buy a car with 100-dollar bills, it's no less suspicious than if I'd used 50-dollar bills.

The funny part seems kinda obvious.

On the contrary Qinella, from what Ive been told by numerous Koreans is that its not an issue of just laundering money but passing on bribes to public figures. Ask your closest Korean friend about 'peach boxes' for example. I am NOT saying it necessarily makes alot of sense in the long run, but thats the thinking behind it. IE if you want to bribe an assemblyman with a half billion won, it will literally take up alot more physical space and be alot more visible then just slipping a briefcase full of 100's to your target. Remember those bank checks are theoretically more traceable then common currency.
