 Posted: Thu Jul 05, 2007 7:00 am Post subject: 600,000 won housing deposit deducted from 1st pay cheque |

Have a friend who is coming to the end of his contract and it looks like his director is holding back on re-reimbursing him for the housing deposit that was deducted from his first two paycheck's. Apparently bills that have been payed are being disputed! Firstly I seem to remember reading elsewhere on this site that deducted housing deposits are illegal, secondly any advice on directors trying to screw ya over saying that bills that have been payed at the bank every month by the teacher have been payed by him too...?

If the deposit is mentioned in the contract that was signed, too bad nothing you can do.
If the deposit is NOT mentioned in the contract signed, go to Labor and get it back.

you should still have receipts and entries in the bankbook that correspond to the payments. Show them to the boss. |

If the bills had been paid twice in a month (by teacher and by employer) .. This would have been clear to the teacher when next months bill was received .. because the bill account would have been in Credit by the amount which was overpaid the month before ...

This is the problem with most places...The employee can actually take the bills down to the bank and pay them their self and it doesn't require a good speaking ability using Korean...Owners have used this method of paying for so long to pay their other bills at the expense of the employee that it is really sickening...
Here is all that happens:
1. You receive the bills by mail in your postal box if they are sent to your apartment
2. You take the bills with you to your local bank
3. You politely smile and place the bills in the little tray along with the money you owe when you go to the bank cashier (she will probably smile back)
4. You watch the cashier go onto the computer which is hooked up for the entire country to do electronic transfer of money you are paying.
5. The casheir gives you any change you have coming and will put it along with a receipt in the little tray (She will probably smile when she does this)
6. You smile and say thank you or if you know how to say it in Korean all the better.
I got ripped out of money on more than one occasion until I got wise and told the owner of the hagwon I worked at I would pay my own bills...
After that there was never an issue, because I was in control of my money and not the hagwon owner... |

I thought that the problem which was raised by the OP was that his friend had paid the bills for himself ... and the employer was now saying that he "the employer" had paid the bills as well ...

Paying the bills the op is probably talking about is the bring your money to them and they pay them that normally takes place...In the vast majority of places the employer says "bring the bills to us and we'll tell you how much you owe." been there, done that, got screwed
IF the OP had actually paid the bills theirself, then it would not be an issue because as the other posters mentioned he could simply show them the receipts, but with no receipt except the one the owner conventiantly lost, there is no proof the OP can point to... |
