Here are couple of links to articles that will provide information concerning online vs. onsite instruction. No criticism against onsite classes, but people who want options should know a little about the differences between the two.

I can't understand why anyone who is going to spend more than one year wouldn't take the time this summer to upgrade their credentials which could increase your income and job opportunities. I really enjoyed my courses and am getting more respect from my school for having done this on my own time and my own expense. I always enjoy hearing new ways to teach. Not all work for me but each one that does make me a better teacher and my job a little easier. So. if you are wavering-GET OFF YOUR BUTTS AND DO IT! There are programs as reasonable as $200. Why not just do it! |

I had made a post, then had to delete it (I had mentionned the name of a popular TEFL online course, but apparently no posts which could be considered "advertising").
Anyhow, I had just an online TEFL, it took a month to complete (you have up to six months), the cost was approx. $ 300 Cdn., and now I get the pay increase! It's well worth it - sacrifice your weeknights for a month, and you'll be done! |

Drama Overkill said it best...the value is quickly realized when people place their personal development over many of the other attractions this country has to offer...In the long run it will be a benefit to the individual as well as the EFL-ESL community... |

Huh????? Three hundred Canadian dollars (approx.) - that's about $280~290 American dollars, I think. What's so difficult to understand? Guess we know who wasn't a math major! |

If I could get a PM as well, that would be awesome. I was just thinking about posting this exact question when I saw this thread. I would love to hear recommendations for online programs and whatnot... via PM of course. |

I would love some recommendations too. Already had one but would be nice to get different perspectives of the various courses. |

Hey Drama!
I'm not bad at math. I grew up on the border with British Columbia and it was always fun to tease my Canadian friends on the low worth of the Canadian dollar. I was just indulging myself in a little nostalgia. I used to go see the peelers, give them $20 US, get two fine beers and $20 Canadian back. It was like it was for free! (until I spent the Canadian money back in the states )
I was reading another thread that said the Canadian dollar is up to 95 cents or so against the dollar these days. So really not bad math, just a sense of humor. I suppose, these days, with the costs of liquor and smokes in Canada that's another thing you can't afford......... |

For folks who have completed these courses, did you learn much? What specifically did you study? I've been teaching in Korea for three years, are there courses available that will show me something new?
How much time does it take to complete? Do you go at your own pace or is there a strict schedule?
Maybe these questions are being answered in the PMs. Can you send me one too? |

Those are very important questions. I have to admit that my primary reason for pursuing EFL certification is monetary reason, but the other reason has to be what do you get for the course other than nice little certificate? Can you answer these questions here?
Is it only good in Korea? Can we use the certification in other countries like Thailand, Vietnam, etc.? |

Most online offerings can be completed by students within a reasonable time. The course will vary from one to another, and the acceptance of course to course will vary as well. Ultimately the acceptance of the certificate is dependent on the hiring country's acceptance, because at present there exists no International Standards body authorizing the world-wide acceptance of such credentials...
