Here at my public school in Incheon we are going to have a 3 day English camp - 9am to 12pm everyday. The schedule for the camp is greatly reduced because of (1) the fact I'm doing another week long English camp from July 23rd to July 27th elsewhere (2) the absense of a couple of KTs taking their vacation and (3) the fact I'm taking my vacation starting on Aug 8th through til Aug 19th. So, on Friday at the end of the teaching day a meeting was hastily planned to discuss the upcoming English camp at our school.

Some 2-3 weeks prior I had generated a list of camp ideas and presented it to my 3rd grade co-teacher. This list was presented to the others at the Friday meeting. They went along with my ideas for 'science day' because they did not have any ideas themselves. One of the members asked me how long will it take to do one of the suggested science experiments(activity). I felt this person was so much more concerned about the TIME and not about how much FUN the students will have that I did not reply. My ideas for a treasure hunt got the approval from one of the three members. Also on my list of camp ideas was cooking activities -students would make some food (perhaps one dish and a dessert -MY IDEA). Their idea for cooking was ..ready? A God Damn sandwich! Unbelievable! They want me to come up with a Canadian snack.

I had asked them for their ideas not just for the cooking activity but for the science and sports activities for the three days. They just pointed to my ideas as they had no ideas themselves! I feel the responsibility is on ME to plan the activities with little or no input from the others. I am prepared to accept my share of the responsibility but I object to them just following my lead. There is no group consensus and group cohension evident.

I made it clear to them I do not have all the ideas and to look to me for the ideas was putting too unnecessary pressure on me. The meeting ended without complete agreement on activities for the three days.

I'm bummed..out over this.

Umm...the camp IS your responsibility. That's one of the duties native speakers are supposed to do. Just write out the schedule, tell them that's what you're going to do and that should be that.

Yeah. I came up with my entire Camp lesson, theme, and time tables. The only thing the Korean Teachers did was tell me the days and the number of classes.

Some schools DO plan the whole camp out for their teachers. I've noticed that the people who make their OWN camp tend to have more fun with it. The people that have to follow what was spoon fed to them end up having a really long summer.

Boiling vat of oil and make some beaver tails. Tell your 'co-teachers' they have to remove the tail by hand.
