Quote:
'Twas a holiday in Korea when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

The alarm clock was off, the coffee maker not set,
In hopes of sleeping in with no worry or fret;

I was sleeping, nestled all snug in my bed,
While visions of home danced in my head;

And not a soul was stirring or out and about,
Not the sound of a car or a childs shout,

When out on the street there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

Twas not yet even seven, the sun was still low
But that didnt stop the vegetable truck below,

With blaring speakers that awake the dead
The goods for sale, the driver read,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I did my best to sleep and not be a p***;

Just as I dozed back to sleep once again,
Another vegetable truck arrived and called them by name;

"Theres, dalgi! Theres, gyul ! Theres pears from Peru!
Come one, come all, Happy morning to you!

It was only eight this holiday day,
But that didnt keep the vegetable truck away,

So away from my house, he moved down the road,
With the high volume blasting, announcing his load,

In a stupor and daze I tried once more,
In attempt to sleep despite the roar,

As if some cruel joke, I heard more sound,
A truck selling fish was driving around,

Fresh, live fish for sale and it was not even nine,
A loudspeaker blasting that his fish were just fine,

With coolers full of fish in the back,
I heard my neighbor buying a sack,

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself

With a wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled his bag with fish; then turned with a jerk

He saw me staring out the window I chose,
And giving a nod, he smiled and rose;

He sprang to his truck, to the neighbor gave a whistle,
And away he drove off like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight,

"Happy Constitution day to all, and to the waygook good-night."

Laughing Not that long, I memorized "The Night Before Christmas," when I was a kid, the vegetable trucks supplied the rest.

I feel for you. I woke up to the sounds of hammering and buzzsaws this morning at about 7;30am. Of course, now that it 10:30am, and a reasonable time to be working on construction/renovations, all is quiet in my neighborhood, and has been for the past hour.

A Korean friend once told me that those loudspeakers are, in fact, illegal in Seoul. He said that the city government felt they were "too third-world". Anyone know if that is true?
