There are people who should be retired but because they have debt they have to keep working. |

I think it's bad planning. If you have to work past 60 because of debt (barring unforeseeable tragedies), you made some bad decisions earlier in life. I also believe that any debt your spouse has is yours as well.
We have a mortgage, but once we can unload 4 other properties, that will be dust. |

Indeed. If "the older you are, the smaller your debt" were true, I'd be friggin' zygote.
As Demophobe's post indicates, when people buy property they will generally see their personal debt soar beyond mere college tuition (and beyond belief if they buy in Seoul). But by that stage in our life, "debt" is only one side of the ledger. |
