I tell my students the truth about my blue eyes:
The disadvantage is that blue eyes are more sensitive to light, and therefore, sunglasses are often necessary to function outside.
The advantage is that blue-eyed people can see in the dark, much like an owl or a cat.
Really. Jin-jah. |

LOL I did a lot of private lessons last year. Got really frustrated really quickly. Began to tell my friends that the people I worked for expected laser beans to come out of my blue eyes, bestowing upon them the power of fluency within a matter of weeks. |

Thats true.. well, the sunlight part.. (don't know about seeing in the dark - but I do have some really good night vision to maneuver in the dark.. but doesn't make sense with the eye color relationship though).
But the sensitive to sunlight.. definetely.. i squint ALOT.. actually almost everytime I'm exposed to sunlight.. then the pale skin starts to burn.. |

What I heard once is that people with blue eyes are more sensitive to bright light AND that they see better in bright lights.
But I love those moments when a kid on the street says, "Wow, Blue!" This to their Mom or friend. It's like they can only think of blue eyes in English. |

| I also have blue eyes. I am reminded daily by the Koreans around me that they are not only blue, they are also big. Many of my students seems to get mesmerized by them. Makes keeping their attention on their books that much more difficult. |

| I have green eyes but students in several classes have told me that they were blue. Sometimes if it's the dominant student in the class that says this the whole class will go along with it. I've never caught these changing eyes in their blue stage when I've looked in the mirror. Maybe my eyes are having a laugh at my expense. |

Only twice have students mentioned my blue eyes.
And once a student said they were purple! (no hangover that day) |

Is that for real?
I had a black co-worker when I was last in Busan - she was a really good teacher

| That's rather an exception. A lot of places won't employ black people. |

Diversity in employment profiles isn't really the strong point in ESL
People may be technically the most gifted and talented teachers, but they will have found it tough to find a job initially, purely for the reasons that Zed (and others) has pointed out.
That's the way the dice roll.. but have people in Korea noticed a trend away from such policies over the last few years?
I'm curious as to whether it's such a big deal as it was a couple of years ago.
