Is it normal for them to ask you to email a picture of you passport over email, and why would they want you to do that? |

Yes. I think it is to see a picture of you and confirm that you have the citizenship you need to in order to process the visa. |

It is common. It confirms that you can apply for an E2 visa (only passport holders from 7 countries can obtain E2 visas to teach English) and that you do in fact hold a passport.
It is typical for a recruiter or school to ask for scans of your degree, your passport information page and your resume.
In addition, when they apply for your visa confirmation number they will send printouts of those along with the hard-copy of your degee and transcripts to immigration as part of the application process. |
