|
|
We have a new teacher at my hogwan and she hates everything and everybody. It's been nothing but complaints since day one. Her mouth works, but her listening skills could use some work. All of us have tried to talk to her and everything is everyone else's fault except her's.
She supposedly came here to study under some zenyogi/cult leader/wtf, and became a teacher so she had a place to live and money while she moved on up to cloud nine. Something didn't work out with all of that, but now she's demanding vacation time to go on a trip to Viet Nam with her zen yogi. Whatever.
She's only been here for three months but it's getting ugly at work. According to her she was a teacher in the US for three years and should be paid more than everyone else based on experience. yesterday, she made a point of saying she should be paid more than ME! because she has an education degree and I don't. Someone pointed out to her that she signed the contract and now the pay issue is moot. That set her into a rage.
She kept insisting that she should be paid more than me. ALL of us make 2.2, and no one else has an education degree. I suspect she needs to work on her "people skills."
It's bad enough to hate your new job, but I really hate how she's making the pay issue so personal by putting down my degree and teaching experience in Korea. What a biatch. I've tried to help her. Never again.
BTW- I have 5 weeks left on this contract, so no more big confrontations for me. I want my severance.
Anyone have any experience working with a biatch? |

All I could think of when I read this was, "Please don't be an American. Please don't be an American. Damn! She's American!"
We're not all like her. Really, we aren't. She sounds like a pampered little princess. I thought that she'd be really young, which would explain her being immature. But if she's been on the workforce for a while, she must be at least, what, 25?
Just avoid her like the plague. |

One of the great things about being a teacher is that if you have a suckass cow-orker you can just shine them on and get back into the classroom. That's MY place, and that's where MY ass is the doing the second best thing it knows how to do ... when I'm in the room with my students or when I'm in the bed with my lady, the rest of you fools can all go to hell for a little while, and I won't mind at all.
I think you're right. You can stand anything for 5 weeks, right? |

That sucks. I can only imagine what your Korean co-workers must think of her. Had a co-worker (fellow Canuck no less) a few years back that did the same thing. I think the guy was setting himself up to be some sort of ESL martyr or something. He'd get into arguments with the director over everything from paperclips to where he could safely park his bicycle so the kids couldn't f*ck with it. Although, to be fair to him, a few little sh*ts did manage to let the air out his tires once.
You and the rest of the office ought to start a pool on how long she lasts. Could even make it a class project teaching your students about odds, probability, and betting. I've also found that good old passive-aggressive silent treatment works pretty good. You're almost done your contract...just keep your eyes on the prize: severance, last pay, and airfare. |

I'd advise her to pull a runner.
There were many times I considered it, but enough people cared about me who advised me to stick it out for the tangible benefits (i.e. long vacations, above average pay, bonus, 12-16 contact hours per week). You get the picture. Tell her that hogwon teaching jobs are the pits in the business and with her qualifications she should at least be somewhere like Taiwan or Japan. Give her some leads... she'll be out of your hair in no time. |

OR...OR.......you and the other teachers (foreign teachers) can invite her out for dinner and a few drinks. Then, you guys can explaine to her the situation, how ya'll see her attitude, and how it is affecting the staff (and how it makes fellow ESL teachers look). Giver the opportunity to turn it around, but let her know that THIS IS IT...shape up, or ship out. It is possible she will realize this, and do a 180. If not, well.......advise her to quit.

| Yep, I've met lots of people like that. One day off the plane and they're bitchin about the food, the language, the smell, the buses, the kids, and so on, to say nothing of classroom issues. Sometimes it's just easier to cut your losses. |

She may end up seeing this thread- at some point. I could care less. If she sees it maybe she'll realize what a pain in the butt she really can be. Maybe some others will read this and realize they are being pains to those around them.
Some need to realize that they're adults who made the decision to come here. Other people are not responsible for your happiness. |
