It seems some people travel to have stories to share with others, to drop into conversations in the future. They choose destinations to be able to say they've been there and seem less interested in experiencing a place, less in the moment, and more like a gossip in search of the next juicy tidbit. Not to mention the oneupship and flippancy.
I met someone like that yesterday. Could it have been you? |

Naw, I would never do that.
But it does remind me of someone I met in a bar in Agra one night. . . |

Wouldn't it be great if everyone had perfect personalities?
Everything has it's fashion. Now it's talking about how people 'who talk about how many places they've been' are only getting a superficial experience.

I once went to the Bible and Rifle church. It was way cool. |

Wow, that's terrible. One step away from making your user name out of supposedly cool places you've been to. |

I think these are the people that say "Yeah, done Vietnam, so want to go somewhere else." meanwhile they were in Saigon for 3 days. Only want to go somewhere else to say they have been there. |

Here's a tip. Anytime you meet someone who describes where they've been or where they plan to go by using some conjugation of the verb 'do' (e.g. "Oh yeah, I've done Thailand. Looking to do Nepal next summer."), back away slowly and find someone else to talk to.
Chances are high that person is is a twat. |

I think a part of it is your ability to tell a good story. For example, a friend and I have been to Angor Wat. He's a good story teller. I'm not. To hear him describe his trip, it's as if he was at a whole other place. Maybe he was. Travels affects people in different ways. These are the same people who can retell a taxi ride making it sound like some big adventure. If you are interested in travel, these kinds of people are interesting to listen to. |

I get more of a kick out of people who take on the local affectations.
Met I guy a few years ago who had traveled a fair bit (on vacation - had never spend any serious time anywhere) who took on squatting as if he was a rural peasant after he had traveled through the north of Thailand. He would even perch himself on a chair in a squat. He also came to enjoy spitting. . . |

It seems this thread is about commitment. I agree with Zark I get a kick out of seeing the freaks who after visiting a place ware local garb and carry artifacts from a place. If you are going to be annoying about the places you have traveled go to the other extremefor gods sake comment!

How about those habitual question askers? They try my patience too. "Where are you from?" "How long have you been here?" "Why did you leave?" "What is you long term plan?" "What is the last song you listened to?"
It's like, sheesh, these are the same questions that made me hate getting haircuts back home. Must be some form of speed dating or something. |

I had a friend who would bring her travel pictures with her so she could show where she had been -- totally overtook the conversation. She listed over and over how many countries she had been too. We could guess that she was from a rich family.
Man, don't miss Lyssa at all!! |
