...but it isn't all that cheap!

Last Friday afternoon I offered to buy my (20 adult) students some ice cream from the snack bar downstairs. I handed over W20,000 and sent the class leaders packing off with a big tray, only to have them return downhearted when they found the snack bar locked up. Being the resourceful sort, I sent them back down to the pop machine.

That didn't work either. It wouldn't make change.

Everyone was sweating but forgiving because they 'know my mind'.

This afternoon was much worse than last Friday. I came in for our 3:20 class and Seung-Hoon's hand shot up. "Mr. Boy!, Mr. Boy! The snack bar is open today," he (very slowly) said, with a gleam in his eye and the obvious intent that I would fulfill Friday's promise.

I ended up with an ice cream sandwich booby trapped with that red bean crap. Ick.

[For the self-righteous sorts who don't believe in buying students' love, I paid a double price. They got on a sugar high and were squirrely for the first time. It's amazing how effective asking adults if this school is a high school. Even beginners like mine understood what I meant and shaped up with that question.]

Did you buy YOUR students ice cream today?

I've never bought them ice cream. I'm not self-righteous, I'm just prioritized. Teacher came all the way from the States teach you crystal clear English, you must love me and give me endless, mindless obedience for free or else teacher never call on you!

Coming from someone named 'soy', I wouldn't have expected anything less than species loyalty. You veggies always stick together...kinda like rice.

You aren't buying love, and they may even think you are a sucker for buying them stuff... how about teaching instead? Isn't that what they pay for?

Come on folks . I'm in a glorious mood as I'm officially on Holiday . The kids have been great so I want to throw them a nice little "shindig" ....what snacks would they enjoy ? The same crap you'd give western kids ? How about a few pizzas ?

I bought my kids pizza (the 5000 won variety) on the last day of camp and they loved me eternally. Did it as well for my after school class. Got a lot of goo comments in my evaluation sheets.
