Does it count if you haven't moved there yet? Very Happy I'm trying to research S.Korea to see if I want to move there after I finish this last year of college.

Browneyed girl, it sounds like you would be in that 4% of women in your age bracket.

Taiwan is better to start, but only Taipei, unless you want to ride a motorscooter (I didn't.) In Taiwan foreigners don't mind talking to each other and hanging out together (and of course you'll talk with the locals too, that's a given) but I mean you can get an apartment with 4 other girls right out of college, plus maybe a dog and a cat.

In Taiwan you can also make extra money teaching privates (another thing I never did, but you could.)

Young women don't seem to last very long in Korea, just keep reading here for more details. There are some other posters whom things didn't work out for, I think. They either went home or to other countries instead.

I mean come on if you want I am just trying to save you some bs. Korea is a good country but it is confucian, which means you will get a lot more respect (especially as a female) if you come a few years later. (Ok I'm just guessing on the last part but you guys can correct me if you want, I don't mind.)

Just trying to be helpful and save newbs some heartache.

What are the main languages spoken in that area? Is it mostly Cantonese or something else?

You can PM me with other info. Very Happy

Wow, out of 102 votes, only 26 are women. Mad No wonder the waeguk men go for Korean women--it's a matter of availability!

Women, looks like Korea is a good place to come if you want to have your pick of the non-Korean men. Guys, maybe Japan is a better choice?

No, it explains why the Korean women at my old workplace used to put on a "sweetness and honey" act when the guys were in the room, and then as soon as the guys left, it was like old person prune scowl. *lol* The competition is fierce for foreign guys because there are so few foreigners in general compared to Koreans, and Western women (in their minds, okay, not mine!) are the competition! ( And since there are so FEW foreign women, when there is a foreign woman around then things can get really fierce with them. (in the Koreans minds, not ours! They view us as competition because we know English-I'm just saying how they think.) The Korean women have no idea that the foreign men may actually prefer them! They are insecure, so any Western woman around may be attacked. (Don't we see it on the boards enough, hmm? You think all the bashing is started by Western men? Really?)

I think a lot of the anti-Western women threads are started by Korean women trying to down (what they see as) their competition.

And no, let's not turn it into that again, please! I am talking from personal experience with what I've seen in the workplace!

Korean guys always treated me okay, and so did the foreign guys! The only Korean guy who was really rude to me was one who was half-Japanese-but he was mean to everyone and most likely having a difficult time in country.

Anyway, the point I am making is that because there are so few foreign women, you may be treated like cr*p by the Korean women since they will view you as competition for the foreign guys. I personally never compete-the competition and eating disorders are all something they can have. And I'm not being racist with that statement-I'm just saying it ups the competiton factor in the local womens' minds. Where I live in the States is the same-a lot of competion for military guys in a town with 100 women to every 80 men. In Korea the ratio is the like this because so few Korean women-esp in the sticks-speak English and so it kind of screws up the ratio factor. (Not to mention so few foreigners compared to Koreans in general-and don't think Korean women aren't fighting amongst themselves for foreign guys.)

*Before anyone jumps on me, I could give a damn less. I wasn't looking for guys when I was there, but for all my coworkers knew I could have been. (I wasn't). I just wished I had a video camera to catch the personality shift with the ladies every time a foreign guy walked into the room. And also, there and here, some female friends would have been nice. Oh well. I'm just writing this post to help the female newbs know some possibilities with how they may be treated. I would like to save people some bs that's all.
