My year and a half old Compaq laptop won't read a 4 gig SD card, but will read 1 gig cards. I tried using a usb card reader but that didn't work. Any suggestions?

I've heard that 4GB cards are not standard. I believe that the highest standard size is 2GB. However, 4GB cards are available and do work in *some* modern readers. |

It's not necessarily an SDHC card. There are plenty of manufacturers making regular SD cards at that capacity. Google 4GB SD card. Problem is that a lot of devices can't format that much data and are thus incompatible. If its an SDHC card, "SDHC" will be written prominently somewhere on the card. |

Thanks for the input. My card is an SDHC and and I actually went and bought a multiple card readers, but no go. I guess it was not SDHC compatible. I will have a look for one of those.
It's not a huge drama as I am using the card for my digi cam. It just means I have to use the usb cable to transfer video and photos instead of the card. The drawback being if I am out somewhere and want to transfer the photos and don't have the cable with me. |

Considering his 4GB card was not working in his otherwise working reader, that narrows the list of potential causes and the most common would be SDHC in a non-SDHC reader. That's why I said I was positive-educated guess. |
