I'm going to Beijing for Chusok, and will be going to the pearl market. There is also a great deal of jade for sale there. (I've been there before, briefly.)

I'm very skilled at telling "fake" pearls from "real" pearls, but haven't a clue about telling real jade from fake jade, which I understand is either glass or dyed onyx. I know that the pearl market (misnamed, as there are many things besides pearls available there) is loaded with fakes, but my concern is real versus fake jade.

Anyone know? Thanks for your help!

Heh heh heh. I hope you've packed your hammer! Sorry, I'm just having fun imagining you wreaking a little havoc.

It's very difficult to tell real and fake jade apart. Even Chinese *experts* fail sometimes.

Good luck, though!

If it's so hard to tell the difference, why care? Buy some cheap ol' jade and be content in the fact nobody will know the difference!

In my mind, its the principle of being ripped off or being sold something that is not legit/ as advertised.

Then, really, really, don't buy that Rolex you're offered by the man on the corner in Beijing. Sarah, you go right ahead. Everybody happy!

I'm not saying get ripped off. I'm not going to pay full Rolex price for a fake Rolex. But say some vendor could produce for me a watch that looks exactly like a Rolex, will last as long as a Rolex, and works the same as a Rolex, yet is somehow NOT a real Rolex. The price is $10. Hell yeah I'm buying the fake Rolex.

I bought a very nice fake Chanel Watch with "diamonds" set in it off the streets of Myeongdong. I have had it for two years and it looks as good as new.

Many of my uni students think it's real! Hehe...not on my salary!

I'm with oneofthesarahs on this - if they can sell me a fake rolex with oyster perpetual movement for 20 bucks instead of one that goes tick tock for 4 (the tick tock for four bucks, for the record, I got the last time I was in Beijing and it lated me a coupla years), I'd buy it. It's jade, after all - not much to write home about, real or not (that said - great link, peppermint).
Enamel eggs from the Beijing factory have a much more impressive provenance.

(And here I was thinking this was a discussion of jaderedux vs jaderedux2 - an issue upon which I could state definitively - they are the same.)
