As many of you may know, if you try opening clips from the MSNBC site in Netscape or Opera, you get a snarky message that you MUST use Microsoft's Internet Explorer to view this page.

Well, I've got IE7 and it still won't work.

More to the point, I just did a fresh re-install of Vista and everything is up to date. I also have the Adobe Macromedia flash player installed. I am trying to view Olberman, if you must know.

All I get is a bunch of flashing words: Your video is loading; loading; done, on various locations of the screen.

And nothing ever happens.

I tied looking for online help, but all I got was a headache.

Anyone else having this problem? Anyone solve this problem? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Clear your cache and cookies.

Also, update your Windows OS.

Finally, if all else fails, turn off your firewall and/or lower your security settings on IE7.

And if that doesn't work, try running Firefox and switching over to IE within firefox. There is an add-on you can download which does this. It seems to emulate an older version of IE 6. Sometimes it works for things like this, but since you have Vista, which is little more than an XP workover with a pretty face and tons of DRM (Digital Rights Management), you may be out of luck.

Not sure they want you to view that overseas for free. Could be wrong.

Hey, to make a long story short, I got it working!

But first a rant from our poster:

Quote:
update your Windows OS.

Believe me, I sincerely wish I could, but Vista's the best Microsoft can do at the moment, even with all the updates installed.

I don't want to be considered a Microsoft basher, but isn't it a bit ironic that using Vista and IE7 at the default settings blocks a website part-owned by Microsoft from working properly?

And then there is IE7 itself. After doing all the updates, and then installing some third-party program, IE7 wouldn't load. This is not the first time this has happened with Vista. After manually inactivating the frozen IE7, THEN I saw a message box, something about wanting to install a module, I think it was MDM.exe. But check yes or no didn't make any difference, it still popped up and IE7 still didn't work.

I had to go into Windows system32, delete the exe file, immediately empty the trash so it wouldn't come back to haunt me again and again, and then IE7 worked fine. It is some old programmer editing thing from 1999, and is of no function to a consumer. There's more info from Google, if you have this problem.

Now don't go posting stuff about getting a Mac. I used Macs on my last two jobs before becoming an explat, and they all S-U-C-K-E-D bigtime -- crashing programs, memory management problems, cryptic two-handed six-fingered neo-CPM commands. At one job the Macs were old, along with their software, at the other both were brand new. The new ones were far worse, crashing every couple of hours, then waiting an hour or more for tech support to try to find the cause. My boss told me it must be my fault the new computers were crashing cause Macs don't crash! Yeah, right. They had to eventually throw away one of the new programs.

And then having to listen to MacHeads chortle to anyone who would listen, and even those who weren't, about how Macs never crash, all the while listening to their profanities as their computers crash, etc., was like working in a loony bin.

Microsoft's Vista isn't perfect, but it doesn't crash four times a day on me, unless I do a certain thing with a data DVD disk, so I am not really complaining.

end of rant.

So I lowered my security settings to minimum and accepted all cookies. IE7 played Olberman. So I gradually restored the settings. It still worked.

This suggests that it had to let in a cookie or something to communicate. So I guess at this point clearing the cookies might not be a good thing. I might try it as an experiment, later.

The idea of firfox emulating IE is an interesting one. But I think Netscape does that, too, being a cousin, but it doesn't fool MSN.

At any rate, Vista is working much better since I did a fresh install. It got all messed up when I tried to load some older programs using the workaround application within Vista that is supposed to install older programs, lets you, then stops midway and won't let you uninstall them.

There are also some annoying false Vista promises, like information about the hibernate function in the help section, but no hibernate function on the computer.

I keep seeing little things like this that seem to shout THIS IS STILL A BETA VERSION, but they released it anyway.

Luckily, I also brought my XP laptop so I can use something besides the Internet.

Gotta go. Time for Countdown.

Oops. Doesn't quite work with default settings. Heard the ad, but blank screen - that's it.

So I went into unprotected mode. Works great, except for all the warning messages that I am in unprotected mode and my computer's in danger.

From MSN?

Not a problem, since I use Opera for most of my browsing.

Well, it would be nice if IE7 wouldn't crash when I put the mouse pointer on the header of the popup video box.

Say, who is this Melanie Morgan, anyway?????

Here's the link, if you can watch it:

She's under "worst person."

I'm a web developer/designer. Millions of people look at my websites every day.

The best way to solve your problem, the one that solves the problem for not only you, but everyone else? Don't gripe on a message board. Write MSNBC and email and tell them their videos don't work in ie7.
