Saw this job on worknplay. It is a classic. That pay wants me make to work for them, 1.5m Smile. Why don't they look for native speakers rather than a "philipine"?

If a Philippine has good English skills I don't see why they can't be an English teacher.

I've met a few Philippines in Itaewon, none of them speak English well enough to be teachers of it. They work in bars and restaurants for about 40000 won per 10 or 12 hour shift. They shack up together in cheap accommodation and wire as much won as they can back to their 3rd World home, where incomes are a fraction of even their pitiful Korean earnings.

A contract offering 1.5 million per month probably looks like a gold mine to them even if housing, bonus and return flights are not offered.

And lets face it, all us wage slaves have to take it where we can get it. Wink

That's a fortune by PI (can't spell it) standards.

In Thailand they get 10-15kB that's under 500,000 Won. (And they take a lot of abuse too.)

1.6 is rumored to be the "going rate" for illegal teachers,so no surprise with that 1.5 salary offer. It is surprising that someone put it in writing.

Actually, a Pinay with an F2 AND a degree would be a legal teacher.

I just feel that teachers (no matter their nationality, as their are Englishes in the world) should be treated equally. I have met some Phinos that speak English very naturally and could be very good teachers, so why is there a divide between salary?

Why: supply and demand. A Phillipino warrants, to the students, a lower tuition. This means less pay.

It is surprising that someone would put the LOW salary in writing. Usually, these kinds of "schools" tend to do things "hush-hush." When things are in writing, like this, those unluky enough to work there can compare salaries.

That would have to be a degree from a country where English is the official language right?

A racist warrant. After all the ad wants a fluent English speaking Philippine with a tertiary degree, so the applicant has to be as qualified as us. So the lower pay is based on ethnicity.

Too bad there is no union here for FTs to put a stop to that.

Its a business. Its not a big deal that they are offering 1.5mil.

So a business wants to lowball someone on their wages. They aren't forcing anyone to work there. You either take the 1.5 mil or you go somewhere else.

The only way I can see that Ad to be racist is if it had said "If you are white then you will get paid 2.0million."

What kind of visa would the teacher have? Trying to hire an illegal immigrant because he's cheaper seems to fit under the general rubric of racism, don't you think?

I found this on the internet about phone english:

---
Well, At Least They Left Out the Bone in the Nose

In a recent story, the Munhwa Ilbo (Korean) complained that some over-the-phone English classes supposedly taught by native speakers were actually being taught by Filipinos without credentials to teach English conversation (which, apparently, falls into something of a legal gray area).

The article is all fine and good, but Jesus, with all the Filipino wives in the country now (some of whom, interestingly enough, are being employed by local governments as English teachers in rural communities), the Munhwa Ilbo might have reconsidered running an accompanying illustration like this:

You're being one eyed.

The ad explicitly states it wants a particular ethnic type, which is racist in itself. Never mind offering a below market rate salary to that ethnic type ( everything else being equal.)

"Excellent opportunity and career prospects for a paraplegic recent law graduate for entrance level position in a high profile, prestigious, downtown law firm. Salary... ( insert amount 25 to 35% below that for market going rate if you can walk.)"

According to your logic there's no discrimination going on because the ad doesn't explicitly state "If you can walk we will give you more money, the actual going market rate for a recent graduate in fact."

Doesn't mean they can do whatever they like.
