I don't know what's up with me these days. I often wake up feeling depressed and not really knowing the reason for it.

When I do really wake up, I get cheerful. Relative to so many people in the world, I am lucky. I have my health. I don't work for a dollar a day. I live in a safe place. I am not dealing with floods. I've got it good. I am very thankful for my current living situation.

I am wondering if others on Dave's feel blah getting up everyday. Is it a natural part of waking up? Do other people wake up feeling happy? Is the depressed feeling a consequence of fighting the body to get out of bed?

What would cause people to feel happy or sad waking up? Dreams? Brain chemicals? Stress?

It's been raining a lot recently, so that might be a reason. How I feel when I wake up depends on if I have to go to work.

I wake up sleepy-headed with an urgent need to pee.

So... anxious?

I've been waking up with really piercing headaches the majority of the past few weeks. It's annoying.

Back in the States I wake up feeling bright and refreshed, ready to take on a new day, thinking "Alright, Let's get something done! Very Happy "

In Korea, I wake up thinking "Ughh.. Still stuck in this hellhole. I'm so F ing homesick! Mad "

Depends on my life at the currnet moment. Usually, I wake up feeling pretty crapola on a workday, because I am not a morning person by far. But, when I can sleep in on the weekends, I generally wake up feeling more refreshed. I only wake up happy if I have something awesome to look forward to that day, such as taking a trip, a hot date, meeting a nice friend, it's a holiday or my birthday, etc. I hate mornings, but not if it's to catch a plane to go on a lovely trip. I especially wake up feeling crappy on good old Mondays. Crying or Very sad

I wonder how this guy felt first thing every morning.

Ota Benga was brought from the Belgian Congo in 1904 by noted African explorer Samuel Verner along with other pygmies and displayed in an exhibit in the 1904 St. Louis world's Fair.

In time Ota Benga began to hate being the object of curiosity. "There were 40,000 visitors to the part on Sunday. Nearly every man, woman and child of this crowd made for the monkey house to see the start attraction in the park - the wild man from Africa. They chased him about the grounds add day, howling, jeering, and yelling. Some of them poked him in the ribs, others tripped him up, all laughed at him.

About five years ago, I went through a period of depression which lasted around three or four months. It was related to a driving job I'd done for several months prior to that. I woke up at about 4am every morning, horribly depressed and anxious, and couldn't get back to sleep until about 7am or 8am. I'd then sleep until about 2 in the afternoon. Ugh. I also recall waking up dazed most mornings when I went to uni, which was related to booze and other mood enhancers I would partake in during parties (which would happen every night). So I think alchohol, drugs and stress are probably the biggest influences on how you feel when you wake up.

These days, I wake up in an annoyed state, because construction work is going on beside my house (and has been going on for about five months now). They start as early as 6am sometimes, and work through until 7pm. However, they stop for a break at about 7.30 am, so I usually go back to sleep for 30 minutes and wake up in again, in a better mood this time.

I did go through a phase of waking up and thinking, "I'm in Korea," and wondering how I would deal with the trials and tribulations of the day.

Sunlight is a good cure for persistent depression. So is work. Also, love.

Ever since I came back to Korea, I've noticed that my feet (ankles and joints around my soles and toes) and my knees hurt whenever I get out of bed, regardless of the weather. This never happened in Arizona.

Dev maybe you're feeling this way because subconsciously you think this is all you can do. The thing is, you can do so much more. Maybe move on?

I feel kind of sad when I wake up these days. I think ROCKLEE is right...it comes from a narrow perspective.

True. And it's very easy to get that narrow perspective while living in Korea unless you have friends here that understand you.

For this reason, it's essential to have some foreign friends or you might be prone to depression and have a narrow perspective.

Exercise helps me a lot. It raises my energy levels and lowers my stress levels.

Yeah, it seems simple, but since I've started riding my bike, that's been something to look forward to. I'm pretty isolated as far as friends are concerned.
