as for as multi-core CPUs go, i would suspect most software aren't optimized yet to take full advantage of the power. i'm sure some do take advantage of multi-cores, just that it's probably not very efficient at it; hence the performance increase might not be as significant as you expect.

for the average user, the only reason why i would recommend upgrading is because of the newer video codecs. even if you're not doing video encoding (editing isn't that CPU intensive, but encoding is a beast), the newer HD video codecs are pretty demanding on the CPU for playback. so if you watch a decent amount of movies, esp HD content, on your computer, you might want to consider upgrading. maybe you don't need the latest and baddest, but something on the value end would still be significantly better than what you have.
