OK...so all I managed to glean from this thread is that the scuba diving is better in the Phillipines.
Is it more expensive to scuba dive in the Phillipines than in Thailand? Are the schools reputable? What locations are recommended for diving? I did my open water course on Koh Tao and never got the follow-up certification card, so I probably have to take the course again. I'm planning summer vacation with the Chica, and we both love diving, so I'm interested about this.
As far as comparing the two places, this thread really brings out the hate-on. The original poster should just go wherever the hell they want. |

I was told that The Philippines is cheaper for diving. But I was also told that the summer is not a good time for diving there because of the weather. I want to go back to Boracay for diving, but I was told that its not good to go after July, because of tropical storm season. |

Vietnam isn't SE Asia's premier diving spot, but diving IS available. Nha Trang is Vietnam's best diving locale. Visibility should be decent at that time. |

On the subject of women? I personally like Filipinas better because their English is easier to understand, which goes a long way sometimes. They also flirt all the time! But as far as overall beauty, both Thai women and Filipinas are gorgeous.
Of course, Korean women are the absolute best as far as looks are concerned.

Now that you are in Taiwan? Any changes in this? |

I've heard from people who have visited both countries many times that Thailand is better for foreigners. They say that in Bangkok, you have expats who've lived there for decades, something which Manila cannot say. And yes, the number of foreigner-owned bars and establishments was quite impressive during my last trip to the Thai capital back in June.
But I do remember a number of posts saying the Thai government is making things harder on foreigners, especially visas and doing business. |

maybe a stupid question. just taking a poll. which of the two do you prefer? even which cities, manilla or bangkok? im curious since i never visited both. kinda the same countries? if not, what differences??
thanks a lot |
Cities - Manila vs Bangkok. I liked Bangkok.
Countries - Thailand vs Philippines. I loved the Philippines.
7000+ islands in the Philippines...it's an explorer's dream! Particularly great place if you like beaches, islands, and live music.
There could be a strong argument for both places, and most would much more strongly argue in the pro-Thailand direction. But to me, that makes The Philippines all the more better. Everyone is so geared up and ramped up for Thailand...leaving all the legions of tourists everywhere in Thailand, and NOT in the Philippines! It's perfect for those of us who love the Philippines much moreso. |

Tiger, I understand your bias toward the Phils, but well, not everyone is married to a Philippine national and enjoy a bit of protection should they want to set up a business there. I met several on Boracay who were foreigners but they all had Pinay wives.
I don't think I'll marry a Filipina simply to open a biz there. |

I was referring to travel, not starting businesses.
For a business, they seem to be like just about anywhere else. If you put enough money in the bank, get an investor's visa. You could start a business almost anywhere regardless if you were married to a national or not.
Thailand seems to have a lot more expats and expat-related businesses, but I also hear a lot more nightmare stories about it. I've never tried to start a business in either country or anywhere else, so unfortunately I can't add anything to that particular debate.
I do know several unmarried Americans who have started businesses in the Philippines. One has an internet cafe, and the other bought five jeepneys and made his income by hiring drivers to take them on certain routes. Both did/are doing well. |

Well, I don't think I've traveled to either country well enough to decide which one is more foreigner friendly, but well, I have heard from many people who've gone to both many times that Thailand wins in the foreigner-friendly department, though that might change later on.
I personally prefer Filipinos over Thais, but I think that's mainly because I don't know Thais well enough, especially those who speak good English. Thais have been very friendly to me, but I haven't had an indepth talk with one. And well, I've heard of horror stories about farang in Thailand, but that also shows me more foreigners are there to get these stories.
Anyway, I think I'm hitting Boracay next month, I CANNOT WAIT! |

is there a lot of difference in prices between manila and boracay? I plan on sitting on the beach drinking cocktails most of my time =D and don't really want to spend a lot of money but the beaches in boracay look more appealing than what I have heard about manila. |

Manila is a major city, not a beach city. They have a BAY there and a little bit of dirty sand with trash in it. But it's not a beach, it's a major urban city.
Boracay is a gorgeous world-class beach.
Price-wise...Boracay would be slightly more expensive, but you get a lot more out of it. The price difference is so little it shouldn't be any issue whatsoever as the main reason for choosing to be in one over the other. It's more about what you want to do, and if you want a beach, Manila doesn't have one, and Boracay does, so looks like Boracay it is... |

I say Boracay is considerably cheaper than Phuket. I just spent four days in Phuket, and I paid 90 baht (US$2.72) for a bottle of Thai beer (Singha or Chang). I remember paying just about $1 in Boracay for San Miguel. I didn't mind Phuket but I probably won't go there again because it's too damn pricey for Southeast Asia.
Boracay is also smaller and that means it's better to get around. Phuket taxis have no meters and you'll end up paying 100 baht for short trips. I also had trouble communicating with Thais but had little problems with Filipinos.
My vote goes to the Philippines! |
