Here in Korea, it doesn't matter if you are a teacher, engineer, or ddd worker, the fact is we all have a common bond.
We are all outsiders in a very Xenophobic country.
Constantly I read posts whereby someone will say they got ripped off, physically assulted, discriminated by the police judges etc, and there will always be some dude who does the, well it's your fault, shouldn't have signed, shouldn't have stood up for your rights etc garbage.
Let's be more supportive of the Fillipinos, the Russians, and everyone who is an outsider in this country.
Whenever a group tries to take a stand, for better work and conditions, there is always one *hole, who will take the side of the Koreans, thereby sabotaging the whole effort.
Think about it people. If a Korean person were to smack you in the head in the streets, wouldn't half a dozen Korean people swear on their Mothers' grave that you were the one who started it.
We live in a Xenophobic environment so it is very important to be supportive of one another. Don't let the exploiters, and racists, divide and conquer.

I agree that foreigners should help each other more.
also I think that if you hate the country so much u should get the * out. Why would you want to live with exploiters and racists?
Did some Korean smack you in the head in the streets or something?

Here we go, some people just can't help themselves, with the derogatory comments.
No, no one has smacked me in the head, I did not say that I hate the place, and lastly I did not say that all koreans are expoliters and racists.
I'm saying we should help each other more because we do have to deal with many people who are exploiters and racists.
It's a very simple message, a message that isn't difficult to understand!

Contrary to what I read on Dave's, I'm just not in a position where I need to defend myself or others from the big bad Koreans. That being said, of course I would help a fellow foreigner out if I were to witness something happening and I knew said foreigner hadn't done anything to deserve it.

This us versus them mentality gets old. If anyone needs your help and you can reasonably assist then you should. Koreans are as much my brothers as any of you.

I think you are over-estimating the amount of xenophobia and its effects. Obviously it is here, but not always manifested. Just as often, we outsiders get treated better because we are outsiders.

I would have been more prone to agree with you had you said something like: When there's a problem, help the person, regardless if that person is a waygookin or a Korean or whatever else. As it is, I read your post as drawing a line between Koreans and us, and that is also a type of xenophobia.

-One thing that is different about Korea, as it has been described, is that ANY foreigner is EVERY foreigner. Even if you are the nicest, kindest, sweetest, christian bi-lingual, married to a Korean wife, kind-of-guy, people can't tell at first glance. Its like being a white guy in Newark NJ at one AM. (Bad idea, I know). So when some serious idiot starts a bar fight, and gets beaten up for stupidity, YOU will suffer for it, not only the idiot.
-At the same time, we can not police our own, it is not our job. Also its an argument of scope. Remember the money-for-the-beaten-up-English teacher-donation-thing? Clearly defending EVERY waygook is a receipe for disaster.
-THAT BEING SAID, I think that if I were to see anyone getting themselves beaten, I'd get involved really fast.

My (5-year) experience here appears to have little or no overlap with your perception.

I agree with this post for the most part.

I'd help a foreigner out if he was in the right, and being wronged. Not just b/c he's a foreigner.

yea it depends on who needs the help and for what. I really do think that people on this board should be more PRO teacher though, because whenever someone posts that their hogwan is screwing them over with no lube ,there is always the assholes with great jobs that are saying "well you shouldnt have signed the contract. Personally if i see anybody write a warning letter about a hogwon or school i will automatically not work there.

What kind of people do you hang around with, that ONE person can sabotage an entire group effort? Just ignore the guy from then on there.

We live in a Xenophobic environment so it is very important to be supportive of one another. Don't let the exploiters, and racists, divide and conquer.

Dude...YOU choose to come and work here. As for this divide and conquer thing...can you NOT stand up for yourself BY yourself? Don't rely on other people here. Most people are here for money. That doesn't make them bad people it just means that their paycheck takes priority as that is how they feed themselves and their family. I have never and will never rely on other people to fight my battles for me. If you can't get a good deal for yourself...then you are to blame.

And seeing as how there are many illegals here (not just in the teaching department)..I'd be choosy of whom I support.
