I'm wondering whether to buy a new laptop in the UK or wait until I come over to Korea in a few weeks.

In the UK I can buy this HP for 1,223,339 South Korean won:

 HP Pavilion dv9340 Notebook
- Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium
- Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5500
- 17" WXGA+ High Definition Monitor
- 160 GB hard disk drive
- 2048 MB Standard Memory
- Lightscribe Super Multi DVD Writer (+/-R +/-RW)
WAS 999 - Now 799

How much would something of similar specs set me back in South Korea? I tried searching some Korean websites mentioned on this forum but the prices seemed to be at least 2 million won for similar specs. Anyone seen anything for cheaper (same specs though) on a Korean website?

They do seem to be more expensive here.

Saying that I saw a notebook with a 19in screen. 19 farking inches. I would need to start working out extra hard to carry that around with me.

I just did a very quick scan and came up with this:

Samsung Sens Nt-G15A/Y180
Vista Home Premium (Probably Korean)
Intel Core Duo T2130 (1.8Gz)
17 inch 1280*1024 screen
320GB HDD
1GB ram
DVD burner (no brand listed)
Radeon x1250 128MB video

899,000 won

Ram is a bit less, but you can add that in. I'm not sure how this processor compares, might be a bit slower, but the hard drive is bigger, so that's good. The big question is whether you can get a legit English copy of Vista instead of Korean, which I can't answer for you.

From the same site as my above post:

LG and Samsung both have 19 inch laptops starting around 1,000,000 with similar specs to the Samsung in my previous post, perhaps a bit better.

Excellent info, thanks. It would probably work out about the same price with the extra 1 GB of RAM.

I have English copies of Vista and XP so that's not a problem.

Would you want a Samsung?

UK you have a decent choice of laptops as well.

I still think for workhorse laptops Thinkpad is the way to go.

Possibly not. I just looked at some UK websites and they're dirt cheap. I saw specs the same as those quoted above with 2GB of ram for the equivalent of about 1 million won. Are these Samsung laptops total garbage or what? I might be better off paying a bit extra for a Dell, HP or Thinkpad.

Wouldn't touch a Dell with your knob.

HP is ok for the business machines.

Thinkpad for me all the way now. Never looked back. Sod flashing lights and reflective screens. Thinkpad is an ugly work horse.

I owned a Dell and it lasted for years with no problems. They're very high quality laptops.

I presume that was before their mass marketing drive of the last few years.

Most people seem to forget old Dell going bust in the early nineties.

I'm more or less brand agnostic when it comes to hardware, but I'd be curious if anyone has had any experience with Korean made notebooks. Certainly the Samsung and LG 17" and 19" models have pretty good price tags (for Korea, at any rate.)

LG, especially, has what looks like an excellent desktop replacement 19 inch notebook with a GeForce 8600 series video card for the not-too-shabby price of 1.4 million won. (I don't know how that stacks up against overseas competition, as it's been well over a year since I've browsed notebooks.)

Edit: This is the behemoth I'm talking about.
