It seems several of those photographers snapped incredible (gut-wrenching) pics, only to commit suicide from depression months later.
hard to snap out of photojournalist mode even when you have someone dying in front of you...

How about a photo of a laughing black soccer player or a shot of Fidel Castro looking like he's about to kick the bucket to complement the Che Guevara pic?
Or a photo of Robert Mugabe laughing as he leaves another useless summit of African leaders who honor him too much to ask him to be humane?
Or better still, how about a photo of a hagwon owner smiling in a genuine way as he pays a bonus to his diligent foreign teacher?
Just a thought... |

I just posted my best photos presentation on a site that I've been promoting in my own teaching community, voice thread.
Amazing technology and take a look if just to give you ideas of how to extend your classroom teaching.....great tool and I have several groups already discussing/using and hope in the future to get classrooms from other countries discussing here...
But leave a comment about one of the pictures, what it means to you...

Bumping up this thread. I think this one is going to be a classic:
Captured by Nina Berman who has a new photo exhibit called "Purple Hearts".
Here is the quote from the wikipedia page :
| Quote: |
Ty Ziegel (born in 1982) is a United States Marine Corps Sergeant who was seriously injured while serving in Iraq. During his second tour in Iraq in 2004 his group was attacked by a suicide bomber. He sustained massive injuries, but survived. After returning to the United States, he spent 18 months in Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas.
His injuries led to the loss of his left forearm and of three fingers of his right hand, and Ty was rendered blind in his right eye. He also sustained widespread severe burns that led to the loss of his ears and much of the tissue on his face. Despite the range and severity of his injuries, and after over 50 operations, Ty had recovered enough to leave the hospital.
Ty married his girlfriend Renee Kline in 2006. They live together in Illinois. Nina Berman's wedding portrait of Ty and Renee, "Wounded Marine Returns Home to Wed," won the World Press Photo competition for portraiture in 2007. The World Press Photo competition is widely regarded as the most prestigious international award for photojournalism.

This image turned public opinion in the US against the Viet Nam war:

peppermint: did you read the fine print? It says "we're being informed that top photo of Paris was taken NOT by Nick Ut, but by Carl Larson of INF"
This one is pretty famous too:
Just noticed it's already included in this link, which was broken in the OP.

How about this one of Marilyn Munroe, which doesn't appear in that link:

I recently made a presentation titled, "The best photos of all time". I'm teaching a multi media class of teachers and wanted to stimulate their imaginations.
I thought I'd share it here, seeing I put so much work into it and they are just very important and thought provoking images. Our world is moving from the word to the image and I guess I am moving along with it......

Do you have an image / photo to add as being "The Best Photo of All Time" - best being defined as "significant" to the history of that moment?

Certainly not one of the best photos of all time, but one of my favorites: "The Shawinigan Handshake" (96/02/16).
The occasion was to celebrate Canada's Flag Day, and Prime Minister Chretien was to give a speech. Protesters gathered to demonstrate against unemployment changes. Chretien's speech was cut short due to the overwhelming noise of the protesters. While walking through the crowd towards his car, a protester confronted Chretien, and Chretien carried out what in now known as the infamous "Shawinigan Handshake." When asked by a reporter "What happened?", Chretien replied (in his heavy French-Canadian accent), "Some people came in my way. I had to go. So, if you're in my way, I'm walking." Questionned again later in the day Chretien replied, "Something happened to somebody who should not have been there."
Short, sweet, and simple - love Chretien. This photo was very widely publicized all over Canada at the time. |
