To all Euchre players out there, and I'm not sure if there are many because it appears this game is unknown outside the Euchre hotbed of southwestern Ontario, but I am looking at throwing a large world series of Euchre at some point in late September/early October. $20 entrance fee per team as well as booze from each team for the "open bar". I want to find out if theres enough interest in and around Seoul, so please don't hesitate to email me at [email protected] to let me know if your interested. Hope to hear from you guys soon |

Euchre!! Haven't played that game in years. If only I had a euchre partner, I'd definitely be in. When I used to live in the midwest it was the hotness, then I moved to the west coast where everyone gave me the wtf is that face.
How many teams are you looking to gather up. |

It's the #1 game BY FAR in Michigan. Nothing even remotely close to it. I did hear its all over the Great Lakes region though - Ohio, Ontario, New York's Buffalo area, Indiana, Illinois, etc.
I'd like to play in this. |

I dunno, I played back home in Australia. Was huge in the shearing sheds when my Dad worked them back in the 50s and 60s. |

I got curious about EUCHRE ORIGINS and where its played.
Here is what I found out:

Many card historians have determined that it was a direct descendant of the Spanish game Triumph. There is also a kindred relationship with another card game of German origin called Juckerspiel. An early version of Euchre was also played extensively in France during the mid 1700's and was given another name Ruff.
Then again, a reliable source noted that the French renamed the game Triomphe. Finally, another expert claimed that Euchre evolved from Ecarte, and was popularized by the Pennsylvania Dutch. Thus, there are lots of theories and plausible explanations as to the source and history of this game.
During the Napoleonic era in Europe, Euchre was modernized and introduced to America especially in New Orleans (unless you want to believe that the game was introduced in Pennsylvania!). From Louisiana, the game spread along the Mississippi River to the Northern States. |

The British Isles (most notably in the Channel Islands, Cornwall, Devon, Hampshire, and Kent), Canada, Australia and New Zealand all have large followings of the game. Euchre has declined in popularity in the United States since the 19th century, when it was widely regarded as the national card game, but it retains a strong following in some regions. Today, the game is most predominant in the Midwest (especially Michigan, Northern Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa), as well as Pennsylvania and upstate New York all areas with significant populations of German-Americans who settled in those areas during the 19th century. |

It is believed that what we know now as Euchre evolved from the game called "Jucker". Jucker, created by an unknown source, has it's roots in Alsace (a former province of France) circa the French Revolution of 1789. Early in the 1800's, Euchre (the game's new English name) found it's way to the United States. 1872 saw the introduction of the Joker (a card used to represent the highest ranked card in the game or a wild card). Some modern Euchre circles use one joker while other use none. The US Navy, in the later 1800's, was largely responsible for the steady spread in popularity throughout other English-speaking regions of the globe. The popularity of Euchre would grow in the other branches of the military into the late twentieth century.
In the present day, Euchre has found homes in Canada, spanning from Nova Scotia to the Midwest, the Northeastern and Midwest regions of the United States, as well as at sea in the United States Navy (old habits die hard). Further outbreaks of Euchre-mania have been reported in Britain, New Zealand and Australia. |
If anyone else can find more, post it!
Plus it'll bump up this thread.. |
