Tonight I saw the german movie "the Lives of Others" which takes place in East Germany, 1984 (hmm, no symbolism there). It profiles a case the Stasi take on because a gov't minister wants to get some ass.
While that plot summary probably doesn't sound that appealing, I thought it was the best movie I've seen all year (perhaps the last couple years). Great acting, suspenseful plot, and thought-provoking. It is 140 minutes long, but the time zips by and I didn't want it to end.
Anyone else see it? Thoughts? (sorry TB, had to copy you there). |

Didn't this film win the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film? I've been meaning to download it, but I'll get on asap now. |

I thought it was quite good, but I think I'm bitter towards it because Pan's Labyrinth was my favorite movie all year and I don't think that Lives of Others should have even come close to winning the Oscar when up against it. |

GREAT movie. I went on an Germany movie blitz a few months ago, watching The Lives of Others, Good Bye Lenin!, and Munich (tangentially related) over a weekend. Lives of Others was the pick of the lot. Best I've seen this year. |

Far and away the best movie I've seen in years (other than the Predator repeats every other night).
Best scene in the movie: the Stasi captain attempts to appear nonchalant when he looks under the floorboard. The old "Ahhhhhh, vat haff vee heeeere?!" action. Priceless.
Zodiac is worth a look if only because of its 70s-era style. |

Zwartboek is another good movie - made in the Netherlands but there's a lot of German in there since it's about WWII. |

Do yourself a favor and watch Funny Games. Don't read the back of the box, don't read imdb.com. Just do it. As long as you don't mind being psychologically tortured (not like Saw or Irreversible or anything like that). |

Yeah, it's going to be strange. It's a remake but with the same director. Don't know if that's ever happened before. Supposedly, at according to my boss, it was a big underground hit here in Korea back when it came out. The underground hits here seem so random to me. I mean Shortbus wasn't released that widely in the States yet it was available on every street corner here. |

I never thought I'd run across anyone else who'd seen that.
It's an Austrian film, so even more perverse than a German one. |
