Let's see... Shelton is a bit of a misfit and that makes him somehow different from any other expat here in Korea? I have yet to meet a normal expat here and that is no surprise at all in my opinion. How the hell do any of us wind up here anyway?
In any case, the story will purportedly be the subject of a novel he is working on, tentatively entitled The Great Korean Expat Novel No. 123.5 (To Be Completed As Soon As I Finish My Current Hagwon Contract, Yessiree Bob!).
You can also ask this girl as she had something to do with the whole affair:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=1342754
Be forewarned, she has a habit of posting private email exchanges online without asking permission first...
The problem with ROKon is that they wanted to make a print version of their cheesy and rather high-school MySpace pages and thought that anyone other than themselves actually cared. Right! |
Yeah, shelton's just one of the many kooky tpes over here, myself included. as i said, he's harmless though.
I'm too scared to check out rokon after looking at that chicks myspace page...less is more! |

I'd guess that the dearth of such publications related to the general tendency of expats in Korea to stay a year or two. The longtimers here are fewer and farther between than in Japan, for example. |
The dearth of such publications here is related to, well, let's just say:
Can you tell me who the registered owner of each of those magazines is, their visa status and how they are incorporated?
I can't either. |

Uh, that is not the issue at all, although many do or did in fact have Korean publishers, like The Beat in Busan, for example.
My own zine never had a license and the only problem that created was that it couldn't be sold in larger Korean bookstores for legal reasons (unlike in Japan).
Again, please see Bethell's Law. |

Sure, making money from printing publications and selling advertising space in said publications in Korea is easy and totally legal.
I suppose that explains why there are so many examples of foreign media freely available in Korea and why foreigners here have such a presence in print, on TV and on the airwaves.
The government is too busy kicking the Chosun Ilbo's butt right now, they just haven't gotten around to these rags yet. When KBS is being escorted out of the building, why do you think foreigners can just waltz right in? |

Few expat publications here are ever started with the expectation of making any money, the market just is too small for that. K-Scene, for example, had a Korean publisher for 7 years and never made a profit as far as I know. Seoul magazine, in turn, is financed in part by the Seoul City Government.
In my opinion, the Internet was the final nail in the coffin of any successful and broadscale expat publications here. |

That's the cop-out answer. |
No it's the correct answer. Why would someone make such a publication for less than 1% of the population? Especially since many of that less than 1% do not live in Seoul and do not have access to the magazine so are not likely to buy it.
The market isn't there for a publication along the lines of what you have suggested. |

Get writin' Plato! What was that old trashy magazine that used to lurk around the entrances of bars in Itaewon? |

The_Conservative is essentially correct (though the expat market here is theoretically closer to 2% of the local population and some do make magazines purely for the love of it and not for profit).
That said, the English-language market is further divided up between the newbies and the long-term expats here. It's very hard for any publication beyond the strictly news to satisfy both ends of the spectrum.
Which is why the Korean-language market is what most people here in publishing wisely focus on. Indeed, there are many "foreign" magazines in the local Korean-language market, from Maxim (which I used to write for) to Newsweek to Cosmo and so on and so forth.
These days I've practically given up on the local expat market myself since I make far more money and have far more readers in the Korean market. The Korea Times, for instance, has 40,000 "readers" (half of them non-KT-reading Koreans, actually) versus 2 million for the Chosun Ilbo. Do the math.
If more expats actually cared about Korean culture, I'd write and publish more for them, but in fact, most simply don't. This thread, for example, will never get as many hits as the one I posted on int'l debit cards a while back.
Money, not culture, is where the heads of most expats here are at. Which is turn is often why this is such a second-rate place to be, in my opinion. |

I suppose there always two sides eh? I know em' both and they are indeed very much both over that lovely line of nut, but as to which one is the good and harmless variety and which is a bit more dodgy...
well, i'd have to beg differ ( as i suspect would quite a number of ladies around hongdae).... but all in all i suppose it is a matter of perspective...
but tis somewhat of a moot point if the writing doesn't fill the pages with more that what has been. but really all of the mags have at least the occasional highlight. pity we can't take the best of all that, and of the blogs too, and actually end up with one solid publication. one can always hope.
i might disagree with KB, but there's no question, at least as far as Korea Bug is concerned, a lot of the writing was top notch. |

Huh? I knew the former editor/publisher of rokon from the day he set foot in this country. I'm not entirely sure what you are implying but from what i have known/heard about him over the last 3 years or so nothing in any way shape or form leads me to believe he is in any way a matter of concern to the "ladies around hongdae". |

he comes across as way sketchy. this is an opinion, only that, and i could well be wrong.
in all truth we, myself included, would be better off focusing on the quality of the writing (or lack thereof)...
but as this string devolved into posting myspace links to hippie girls i figured a bit of devil's advocate was called for. |
