do you feel like doing something out of the ordinary in a boring everyday location. I'll try and elborate:
* When walking around with slow people in front of you, just kicking their ankles together.
* At school today, with all the teachers there in the teachers office, getting up on my desk and grinding my booty.
* Standing on the subway, and throwing your drink on someone that is stood near you.
*Getting on the bus, and lying in the middle of the bus on the floor and doing press ups.
* On the train, taking someone's mouse off their computer and throwing it out the window. Or mobile phone, would probably be better.
* Sat in an important meeting with your boss, and you open up a beer in front of them. And neck it in one go.
You'll probably think this is a bit strange, but you must have had those urges to do something, just to see what reaction you get. Maybe tedium just isn't good for me. |
Nope, not just you. It doesn't happen often, but it's always a good laugh. |

Korea is exactly the sort of rigid conformist society that invites spontaneous acts out of the ordinary. As westerners the temptation to mock their 1950's unimaginative mentality is overwhelming. Add in the boredom and restrictiveness of being an outsider in this place. Problem is though that these people are so unused to anything at all different.
I've seen foreigners here going out in drag or wearing dyed mohawks. Thats enough to stop a korean dead in his tracks.
I get enough stares as it is so I probably wouldn't add to my star attraction status.
Only thing I do occasionally against the grain of the korean confucian heirarchy is to yell at senior ajosshis who are behaving rudely. I'm quite Ok with them being conservative farmers in suits so long as they realise status is dependant on ones manners, not just what age you are. |

I'm gonna second this, some guy I sat next to on the plane from England to Korea, said that he walked downtown in Beijing, in his underpants with a plastic samurai sword, and a cowboy hat. Because he could. No body is gonna remember him doing it. You just blend in, become part of the day for big city folk.
I have another aquaintance who walked down town Osaka in his pants. Maybe it's that monotony that drives people to do it.
Find it really funny, but can't imagine doing it myself. Maybe one day....... |

When I took a trip to Itaewon in the fall of 2005 I saw this vendor on the street that was selling rubber horse head masks, and I was so tempted to buy one of them just to walk around in once in a while, but I was with a group that was eager to get somewhere, and it was my first time in Itaewon so I just let that opportunity pass me by, lol.
I don't think I've ever seen a person in drag in Korea that wasn't Korean, but I can imagine coloured mohawks on foreigners, considering that my own hair far out of the ordinary. The isolation can drive a person stir crazy here, but it's like we have a licence to be crazy just because we aren't part of society. |

Hmmm........I know what is fun to do.
Have someone send you a minni whopi cushion from home. Then, get on the subway, stand next to a few unsuspecting people, and let it go. Next, stare at them in disbelieve.
That was a knee slapper.

yes, it is just you.
Sounds like you have some anxiety repression issues going on. Have you checked in with reality lately? Or do you still think you live in utopia? |
