Hey this is a message to anyone living in Tanhyeon, Ilsan or anywere near Tanhyeon.

I am a male, 21 from Scotland and I just moved into Tanhyeon yesterday. So far, the area looks pretty alien to me and I dont have a clue where anything is or how to get about. I was just wondering if anyone else out there is from this area and fancies meeting up for a drink?

Thanks

Michael

Ilsan, wow a flood of memories from my first job in Korea. There is the Tanhyeon train you can take there. If you are very new to the area, just grab yourself a cab and ask the guy to take you there (Tanhyeon yok eh kajuseyo). The train takes you to fun spots such as Sincheon/Hongdae area, and Seoul Station.

It has been many years since I lived there and my memory is fuzzy at best. But there are also many buses which run from Tanhyeon down to La Festa and Daehwa subway stations (the numbers have changed since I left). Hopefully other folks will chime in with more up-to-date info.

21 yrs old?? Wow, yer one young fellow.

I work near there, Tanhyeon is kinda dull. I commute to Seoul on the train mentioned. There are some other posters here that will tell you to live in Ilsan proper. That seems to be a good idea. Living in Sinchon might be a good idea too.

Tanhyeon is pretty much the worst part of Ilsan.

Most of the foreign teachers hang out at Lafesta.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Ah well, that is not so good hearing Tanhyeon is the worst part.

Anyway, how far is La festa from Tanhyeon by bus/ taxi. How much does this cost ?

Also, is there any bars in Tanhyeon that foreigners hang out ?

Thanks again !

Bars are in Lafesta, as the above poster mentioned. It's about a 20 min bus ride away.

No foreigner bars in Tanyheon. Taxi to Lafesta should run you 3000-4000 won depending on traffic.

Don't worry mate, I lived in Jungsan last year, right next to Tanhyeon, and it's not that bad. However, I was getting tired of having to get a taxi or bus to La Festa by the end of the year. La Festa is pretty cool though, especially all the kalbi restaurants on "kalbi row", I'm sure you'll love it.

If you are close to Jungsan, by the way, there's quite a nice park with a new full size running track and indoor badminton. Quite often some amateur footy matches on which can be a decent watch with a few beers.

PM me if you have any questions. I'm coming up to the 'San soon for some nostalgia, if you fancy some beers or whatever.

Thanks again all for the replies.

I got a taxi to lafesta this morning. That place and Western dom was really cool. Looked like there was plenty of restaurants and nice shops. And Lake park, wow, nice!

I was just wondering what the best day is to meet foreigners and what is the best bar I should look out for. I am thinking about taking a trip down on Tuesday night. Will there be plenty of foreigners about at this time?

Take the Orange line to Jeongbalsan- stop # 312. Walk past Lotte Dept Store towards the BK/McDonalds. That's Lafesta on the right, and if you cross the area with kids on bikes/scooter/bumper cars (on your left) that's another great area with CGV Imax and more restaurants/shops. Bring a camera the first time- that's an interesting area.
Do that on a Saturday- say noonish or later, and you'll see some other pale faces. There's a Starbucks in LaFesta, and a Toms/Toms on the left that get big crowds of whities.
You'll notice some of the white women in that area have some extra weight ( Laughing ) but at least their boobs are real- Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing . Gotta love 'em!

Hey I lived in Tanhyun for about 2 years just until this past June. True it's a bit of a dump but it's not like you have to worry about getting mugged or anything like that.

Most of the foreigners who work at the Kids Herald and ECC hagwons live in the Woo-Kyoung Offistel. There's a bar named "Mad Max" there and that's pretty much the local watering hole.

The Tanhyun crew isn't as tight as it was when I first arrived there, but I'll vouch for the 2 English guys working at the Kid's Herald since I worked with them. Good luck.

Kids Herald? After all of the warnings posted on Dave's and other boards, some still choose to slave away for that rotten chain? Rolling Eyes Andy still the rotten director?
