sung/hummed?

Today one of my 9 year old boys was sitting in class singing the guitar riffs from Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water. He was also playing air guitar to it. It was so funny but cute, I had to tell him to stop it since I was trying not to laugh. For the rest of class he'd be quit for a couple of minutes and then I'd hear...Du-dun-duh...dun-dun-Duh-du Laughing

A couple of years ago a 3rd grader at my hagwon was singing that Pussycat Dolls song "Dontcha wish your girlfriend was hot like me." He would also do the dance that accompanied it in the Korean camera commercial.

It must be established - at least the guitar riff - as a rock classic in Korea because a couple years ago at our high school festival a band consisting of current and former students (one who has appeared on Korean MTV) played the instrumental version of "Smoke On the Water" - and I ended up being called onto the stage to sing it ...

That's hard to believe a 9 year old kid knows Deep Purple. I don't even know Deep Purple.

ditto.

First day at my public school a lanky 4th grader boy rushes into my classroom hell-bent on trying to impress me with the same song. I was shouting over him when he got to '~wish she were a freak like me'

yeesh. Some things are just plain wrong

"I Am a Pretty Little Dutch Girl"

I am a pretty little Dutch girl
As pretty as I can be
And all the boys in the neighborhood
Are crazy over me!

From a Korean kindergarten boy. Never did find out where he learned it.

I saw a Korean guy walking around with his no-ass GF and on his tshirt it said "I like a little junk in the trunk". Again, no clue what his tee was saying. Almost as good as the Korean guy with the tee that said "Italians do it better." Capitulation. I know many Italians who would be happy to know at least one nation has rolled over and admitted they can't compete with Italians in the bedroom.

I had one student that frequently broke into "It's raining men." This is a 12 year old boy that speaks very good English, I also explained the type of people that like that song yet he continued to sing it. (And yes he understood me when I explained.)

There is also a 9 year old boy that says ABBA is his favorite band and sings "Mamma Mia" every so often.

Machine Head is an amazing Deep Purple CD. But I prefer the song "Pictures of Home" over "Smoke on the Water." Oh, er, songs that students hum? My students only know the Beatles and Michael Jackson. But they never hum that foreign stuff. The only song I ever hear from them is that stupid "MA-RI-A" song. Man, I hate that one.

caught a little kid whistling that music from Kill Bill pt 1 once. I was impressed, but shocked that he'd been allowed to watch it.

As for T-shirts, best I've seen was the little pink one with blue butterflies and the complete "choose life" rant from Trainspotting

Heal the World. He mentioned that song a few times. Yet he didn't know Thriller.
