I plan to purchase a new laptop in Korea because 1) I want the hangeul on the keyboard 2) I want a laptop because Korea will have wireless internet everywhere next year.
A Korean friend knows where to get the good prices online. That is not the problem. Of course I want the Korean hardware but the English software, so I have to reinstall English Windows XP. Please tell me if I am wrong about that!
Now, I want to know has anyone done this? Also which laptop is good? Sony VAIO, Samsung, Fujitsu????? I am willing to spend the money....I want light, high speed, good quality, able to have wireless internet...but which one is good? I am looking at SONY VAIO Z1 series for 2,500,000 won. Please tell me if you have experience with other laptops...thanks |

Viao seems to have a poor reputation. and english os is not available. With any compaq (maybe hp as well) and IBM you can get both english and korean windows. As far as i know these are the only two companies that offer it. Toshiba is supposed to be good. hyunju is supposed to be bad. I don't know about samsung.
I got a compaq presario and had some trouble with the monitor. sent it back and they replaced the lcd screen. had a little glitch with the screen after that but it seems to have cleared up. next time it happens i will send it back. I get to have a new one or my money back.
everything else about the compaq seems good. i think i just got a bum computer. |

i have a compaq presario 2500 model number 2560ap.
THis model has gone out of production. HP is slowly replacing all the compaq stuff i hear.
the specs on mine are 2.6 gigahertz p4 processor
40 gig harddrive
512 mb ddr ram
32 video ram
dvd/cd -rewriteable drive
15' sxga lcd monitor.
also has wireless built in.
what do you plan to use your laptop for. are you going to carry it around a lot or is it a desktop replacement. mine is a desktop replacement so it is pretty heavy and has a limited battery life, about two hours. |

I am going to use the laptop as my only computer...but I still want it to be light (under 3kg) and portable. I don't want a desktop.... I also know Korea will probably be wireless by next year, so we can use our notebooks on the subway, in the car, etc.
Do you know anything about insurance for computers if they are lost or stolen?
I am looking strongly at the Samsung X10.....very nice....but I'll just have to buy Windows XP in English. |

umm, according to who? I did a fair amount of research before buying it, and it was as high ranked as anything else out there. I bought a Sony VAIO laptop last May, and its been great. I think its one step down from the one you're looking at kangnam dragon, but it still does the job. It has similar speficiations as ulsanchris's computer does as well. Cost me $1,400 back in the states. Since Sony charges up the ying-yang here in Korea, Sony is probably not your best option. |

bucheon bum when i did the research for my computer i looked at several sites where costumers did the reviews. Maybe not the best place to go, but..... several of the viao models had poor reviews. Some had really bad battery life. Others the quality weren't good. On some the bottom became to hot. I got the impression that overall they weren't to great. Maybe some of the models were. The most positive reviews i read were of macs. I was interested in getting one but they are very expensive.
I've heard toshibas are very good, but a little pricey. Check out some reviews of them. I've also heard good things about dell but they seem a lot more expensive here than at home.
kangnam i've heard that the way wireless works is that there is wireless modems spread so every so far apart. as you move from one broadcast area to another you lose the signal from the one you just left and you then have to sign in to the area you just entered.. So if you were to use your laptop in car or on the subway you would have to be constantly signing into a new modem.
There are others on this board who know more about this than me and could give you a better answer than I. |

Stay away from Compaq. They tend to run very slow -- poor build quality and components. I've seen the insides, and trust me -- all done on the cheap.
Someone said they had a monitor problem. This was a problem I heard two different friends had.
I would go with Dell in a second over Compaq.
With that said, usually the SONY VAIO are high quality, unless something has changed recently. Even still, it's NOT high enough quality that I would pay the difference -- no way. Machines which are just as nice and fast, but maybe not as pretty, are out there for much less.
If price is no object, take a look at IBM. They are usually rock-solid. Last time I checked, they were similar in price to the SONY. |
