If you have AAA in your home country (I'm a US citizen) all you need to do is either go to a AAA or mail your application and send $15 with two passport photos. Read this link...http://www.aaaorid.com/travel/travel_int_driving.asp
I got pulled over twice for making a huge traffic errors (oops). They looked at the International Driving Permit and told me to not do it again. I was grateful.
They are good for a year, and you can buy multiple at one time. |

It's only $10 (10k won), 2 photos, a copy of your passport and ARC and an hour or so of your time to get a Korean licence that is good for 9 years..... |

I went through trading in my Canadian license for a Korean driver's license in order to rent a car for a road trip next week, but now the major rental agencies are telling me I can't.
Kumho says I need one year of experience with the Korean license.
Avis seems to want a IDP# (I assume International Driver's Permit) in order to sign up.
All of the accounts in this thread are a few years old, so I'm wondering if there's something more recent. Either another rental agency, or something I'm doing wrong in my dealings with the two majors. |

Do you have a credit card? Usually in the west you must use these to rent. I can understand the one year experience. Prob want you to know how to drive in Korea. But outside of that one year experience and a Credit Card should enough to rent. Can't see why it wouldn't be a problem? Is it anti-foriegnerism?
On an unrelated matter, I know Korea licences are recognized in Japan. Not sure if you can rent a car there if you take a trip or not. |

In my experience you need the IDP to rent a car or moped, some companies will do it without a IDP but claim that you may not be insured if there is an accident (which sounds a bit risky).
My advice is to get a IDP because its cheap and easy to do so or get a Korean to rent the car and enjoy the ride. |
