| Art Blakey. I guess he's not rock though. |

Not that I think these are bad bands. But the only way anyone would consider Smashing Pumpkins or Primus "Classic rock" would be if they just turned 15.

Personally, I think that was his strength. |

| Although not classic rock by any means, my favorite drummer is Danny Carey from TOOL. |

Love Primus. Although the drumming is unique, it isn't extraordinary (IMO). However, on the topic of Primus, it's worth mentionning Les Claypool - standardly known as one of the best (if not the best) bass players in recent history.
Re. drummers, I nominate Dave Grohl (Nirvana & Foo Fighters) and Daniel Carey (Tool). |

| I don't think there would have been John Bonham without Keith Moon. I think Keith Moon was the jimmy Hendrix of drumming, music was never the same again after him. |

| Lars Ulrich. If you don't agree, listen to Metallica's One again, and again. |

Lars Ulrich? Come on....Metallica are a sum of the parts.
Tim Alexander is (was) unique in his bass drum work. Thanks to Claypool's style, Alexander was liberated from traditional bass drum patterns. "Is it luck?" is illustrative. Quite right though...not extraordinary.
Grohl is a powerhouse...again, not extraordinary, but explosive.
Josh Freese is another outstanding drummer..a session drummer largely, though he did extended time with Guns & Roses, Devo, A Perfect Circle and of course, The Vandals.
Vandals...

Bill bruford isn't on the list!
Phill Collin's gated-snare style was actually ripped off from Peter Gabriel. For an example of his good drumming, check out the song, "Down and Out" off the 'And then There Were Three' record. |
