I'm considering getting magic-straight doneon my hair but I have heard a couple of differing views about how well it works. My hair is pretty tame and healthy, but I want that really super-straight mega-shiny look.

Has anyone had it done? How successful were the results? What did you pay and how do you continue to care for your hair?
Do you stillhave to run straighteners over it to keep it shiny? What questions would you suggest I ask the hair salon before I get it done? Any particular concerns or advice?
Is it realistic to expect to get hair like in the picture below?
THANK YOU!!!

I had my hair "magic-permed" a few months ago and I really regret it Sad

I had kind of spirally hair before, not out of control just curly, and for about a month after it was straight and really silky. But then it just got more and more frizzy and gross, and I had to use a flat iron every morning just to get it under control. They recommend you touch up the roots but I'm cutting my losses and growing it out...

My hair was long (up to the middle of my back) and it cost me 50 bucks, but took close on 6 hours Shocked

If your hair actually is already straight, you just want it super straight, maybe it works, but I wouldnt recommend it. I've spent a fortune on silicone goop and leave in conditioners since. I spoke to another hairdresser who complained that this magic perming thing uses, like, 1950's technology and really suspect chemicals.

Don't do it!

Usually in order to get that mega-shiny look, you gotta use a hair oil or hair product of some sort. I use camellia oil from Shiseido once in awhile to make it look vibrant and shiny.

The problem could be the flat iron and not enough hair agents to protect your hair from frying. Try simply blow-drying it or letting it dry naturally. Then use some kind of hair product to restore the healthy look.

I have really fine, curly hair naturally. It is straight, but I do have to use a flat iron on it in the mornings or a hairdryer, depending on how humid or how long I'm goin to be out. It was really fun at first though. I'm glad I did it because now i know i love my curly hair. I'm waiting for my hair to grow out a bit before I get a curly perm put in so i can my natural hair grow into that.
My hair is between chin and shoulderlength. it costs me 50,000 and takes about 2-3 hours.

I haven't had it done, but the people I know who have (with Western hair, which is softer) weren't happy with the results. It only lasted a few days before it started going frizzy. Plus it really dried it out.

I would rather keep my soft hair than do that much damage to it for a few days of super-straight.

That's not been my experience at all.

I had it done twice now. Both times were great, and lasted about 5-6 months. My hair was quite wavy, and I could get curls if I used a bunch of product. Now it is quite straight. I'll get it done again in the fall, simply because my bang area has all grown out, and is curling again. Mine was straight and shiny.

My hair was shoulder length, cost 30,000 and took 3 hours.

I have had magic straight 3 times and every time it was great! My hair is thick and a little bit wavy. After you get it done, you need to use hair essence or serum everyday. Mine lasted about 7 months, and then it started waving at the roots agai. I used a flat iron and essence to keep it going. It just sucks sitting in the chair for about 5 hours or longer.

Oh my! Whatever you do, don't get a curly perm with hair above your shoulders. Can you say ajumma? Because it will make you look older than whatever your age is, and it will look ajummaish. One of my Korean friends had her hair shoulder length and curly permed, then all the kids started teasing her at work and calling her ajumma. Now, there is a girl at my school who go a curly perm with above the shoulder hair, and it looked so bad and ajummaish. About 2 months later, she went and got it straightened out with a magic striaght. Looks waaaaay better. Just say no to curly perms. I wouldn't even do a curly perm with long hair. Most Korean men prefer long straight hair or long, little bit wavy hair.

Spliff, I use L'Oreal hair products. Why don't you see what sort of results you get "down there" with them?

Women, thank you so much for your information. I guess the after-care is very important and perhaps length of hair might make a difference- shorter meaning less time under the chemicals and less potential for damage?
I'll keep researching if it is the right thing for my hair.

Oh, and I don't know how people are saying they paid 30,000. All three times mine were between 90-100,000 won. But they gave me a pre-perm treatment to prevent damage, too.

Well, my hair was shorter when I had it done that time (between chin length and shoulder length) and I didn't go to an uppity salon. I went with a Korean friend to where she usually gets hers done. I'm definitely not lying though, if that's what you're implying. They said the price varies depending on the length of your hair.

If you're willing to fork out a whole lot more cash, but get really good results, you should just try Bio ionics. Its a similar procedure, but it was developed in Japan, and, once your hair's straight, it's straight PERMANENTLY, you dont ever need to use an iron or products etc.

For long hair, its close to USD 400, but I had it done once and the results were really amazing. It's like it literally changes the structure of your hair instead of just burning the sh..t out of it.
