Some people weren't meant to travel. It's not a negative thing. Everyone has their good thing and their bad things. Some people here just can't handle it and shouldn't have come.
Some people actually do get ripped off bad, attacked, or other things too though. Not as often as this site seems to say though |

Nice sig quote there, paji. It reminds me of the interview he did with Howard Stern a few years ago, which I was so kind as to upload here. (hilarious) |

The people having a good life aren't on Dave's bitching all day, nor are they posting all their good experiences.
In contrast, I like happy things, like big dogs, smiles and bicycles. |

I do believe it is one of the most asked questions on Dave's.
Why all the negativity? === seen this posted quite a few times.
A lot of people just like to complain. Maybe life is not as good as it could or should be? Maybe we have all been brainwashed to believe life should be wonderful? Maybe a lot of us are lonely, miserable jerks with not much else to do?
Maybe I don't have a clue what I'm talking about. |

My theory:
1) One source of negativity comes from the people who were negative at home. It's their (unpleasant) personalities at work. They are showing their true self. The word 'misfit' comes to mind.
2) Another source is from the attention w*ores. They want to be noticed and can't think of any other way. Call it 'creative deficit disorder'.
3) Then there is the segment that comes from ignorant people who left home to 'experience the world' but didn't stop to think that the rest of the world is different from home and are not comfortable with that fact. These are the fairly ignorant ones.
4) Yet another source of negativity comes from those who came here for money. They resent that they have to live among the barbarians to make a buck.
5) That leaves a small minority who do find themselves in an unpleasant situation and need help/advice in dealing with the problem. I don't consider these people to be true representatives of negativity. |

Compare a Korean forum to a Brazilian forum. Why would you complain on the internet when you could be at a topless beach?
That was also the case in the Caribbean. I used the computer once a week in the islands. Here, I use it five times a day.
For me, it comes down to quaility of life. |

Hello, Paji!
Someone ran a poll which found that most of the posters on this forum are quite happy here.
Whiners may be overrepresented on this forum because the rest of us get intimidated.
Forum members have said nice things about Korea, but they promptly got replies like:
■ "If you see anything good about Korea, then you are not looking deeply enough under the surface. In fact, you are a naive, gullible, fool."
■ "You're a phony liberal. You're like a white person who shakes hands with every black person he sees."
■ "If you're better off here than you were in your own country, then you must have been a real loser in your own country."
■ "If you're loyal to Korea, then you're a traitor to your own country. You didn't give a hoot in hades WHAT happened on nine-eleven, do you!"
■ "So you like Koreans better than you like us, huh? All right, then, reject us! See if we care!"
■ "What right do you have to be happy when we are unhappy? Don't you know there is a Law of Conservation of Happiness?"
■ "Oh! So you're happier than we are! So you must think you're better than we are! Well, tooooouch you!"
■ "If you like Korea, if you like teaching, if you like kids--in short, if you like anything or anybody but Western entertainment, Western sports, and us, you're from Squaresville."
■ "You must be an agent from Korea Herald or someplace." |

Thanks for the responses.
I shouldn't have said "What's up with all the negativity?". I've been around long enough to know that Dave's is a dumping ground for all kinds ot people's "stuff". I should have said "What's up with all the negativity lately?". It seems to me that the board has been more b!tchy than normal in the short run.
You could argue that its just me in a bad mood (I'm not) and I'm projecting. But I think not. I think some other posters have spoken out about it too.
I think things happen for reasons. I think that there is a reason why the board is bitchier than normal lately. A month ago, I would have blamed the weather. Today, I don't know ...
I've found some moderator decisions questionable lately. Letting JAD run around, some deletions of threads, moving threads to the wrong forum (IMO). I know that the mods are not responsible for board content in any "billiard ball" sort of way. But I have to wonder if some policies don't make things worse around here .... |

Thanks. I decided to swap out the Goethe for some Iron Mike.
That's just the way I roll these days.

Yeah, I can see that.

Yes. The thing is, I don't trust those sorts of polls. I think self report is not a good way of assessing happiness. People are always telling small lies to each other to make themselves seem happier and more important than they actually are. An internet poll is a no cost way of perpetuating that sort of strategy. Being unhappy, especially if you're North American, is equated with being unsuccessful.
Anyway, people come to Dave's and rationalize. Whiners rationalize their feelings of frustration and alienation by complaining about Koreans and attacking apologists. Apologists rationalize their feelings of frustration and whatever by professing their love for Korea and attacking whiners.
Thats off topic, but thats just what I think... |

Some people are chronic complainers with negative attitudes. These people come to Korea to teach, find very little to suit them here and can't make friends because they're no fun to be around. So they spend all their free evenings on Dave's whining and complaining instead of living life. |

Be very careful about questioning the mods here. (They don't like it.) |
