China bans King Baes The Legends
Korean Wave hits a snag recently as 5 South Korean dramas with historic themes have been banned on the grounds that China suspects them to be degrading. Among the dramas banned are Jumong and Bae Yoon Juns The Legend that will be broadcasted in South Korea starting tomorrow, September 11, 2007.

Five Korean historical dramas have been banned in China on suspicion of being "degrading"? Northeast Project, anyone? |

It will be interesting to see if this gets media play here. The 'usual' reaction when China does something along these lines is to keep it quiet. |

Maybe the censor just has taste, or a low tolerance for whining and histrionics, rather than any overt political motives. |

The incredible thing is that here in Korea they screen Chinese (modern)historical dramas. These dramas are typically rabid Communist propaganda that glorify Mao Tse Tung. |

I'd agree with you if you were referring to dramas set in modern times. I really like the historical dramas, though. They generally don't have the whining and over-the-top histrionics. Also, although there is a lot of fictionalization, you can still learn something about Korean history. You should give them a try. |

Seems China has even more of a problem digesting different versions of history than Korea does. |

They even played some of those historical dramas in Iran. It was fun watching Yi Sun Shin speak Farsi. |

Only the historical ones? You mean those grating, modern-day melodramatic soap operas are still getting through? I hope the Chinese don't have TV sets in the prisons and coal mines. Those guys are about to have their human rights violated big time. |

its a feature of their nationalism that Koreans favourite shows are historical re-enactments designed to teach them their glorious past. |
