Only F2-1, F4 and F5 visa holders can ever get an international license in Korea. You can easily get a Korean Driver's licence but not an international one. |

You live in Suwon..right. Then it is easy. Take your passport, ID card and licence and go to Yong-in Driver's Licence Building. It is somewhat near the Bojeong train station (take the bus 820 from the station). I was just there last week and they told me that the law changed and we can get international drivers licences because we are permanent residents.
Or check on the net.

follow the link and it will explain everything.
You will notice that it doesn't mention E2 visa people....weird. Every other visa but not E2. |

F2, F4, F5's can get a Korean IDP provided you have an unrestricted Korean D/lL.
E1, E2 and E7's can also get their KOREAN IDPs providing you have been here (had your Korean D/L) for 3 years or more.
I am currently on an E2 and have a Korean IDP. I got the most recent one last July.
The cost is 7000 won. You also need your passport, ARC, Korean D/L and 2 passport type photos.
From Suwon, I believe (been a while since I took it) the 27-1 bus goes right past the Yongin D/L center.
If you are driving, it is just east of the #1 expressway (go under the expressway and turn left) and about 3km NORTH of the South east Suwon expressway entrance (just east of Yongtong). |

The level of misinformation on Dave's is a chronic problem. I'm on a lowly E-2 and I've had two International Licenses (they only last a year).
To the OP, I'm not sure how it would go with your US license, but you might want to get a Korean License (you may have a few steps to take, like an eye test) and then internationalize it for 7,000w and a picture. |

Must I really have had my KDL for 3 years to get an IDP? I've only had mine for 2 years and a bit. I have an E-1. Anyone? TTom, is this true? |

You'll start, I think, with a KDL. Yes, as an American you'll have to take a written exam. |

If NOT an F visa you will have to have been resident in Korea for more than 3 years (or had your Korean licence for 3 years). |

My wife is a Korean citizen and has a US drivers license. What will she have to do to get an International drivers license? For me, I just hope I don't have to take a test. |

there's no test and E-2 visas can get them, too. just bring 2 recent pictures, your passport, ARC and current up-to-date drivers licence with W5,000. to any drivers licence office. there is a foreign licence desk in everyone. go there and fill out the form. you'll get your International licence 20 to 30 minutes later. it's valid for only 1 year so you'll have to renew it every year.
thats what i do everytime i travel...

I didn't see it mentioned above, but an IDP issued in Korea is not valid for use in Korea. |
