I was riding my motorbike on Friday and was keeping up with the group of bikes in front of me. We weaved in and out of traffic and briefly rode onto the sidewalk (it had no pedestrians and was wide, I know everyone hates bikes on the sidewalk). As we approached the intersection, 3 policemen were pulling over every biker. I don't know if it was to check for licenses or for riding briefly on the sidewalk. The cop asked me "Migookin?" I said "Ney." He asked me "license?" I said "Ney." He then waved me on while they carded everyone.
In a country that often looks down on foreigners and treats them differently, it was nice to be treated differently and benefiting from it. Thank you, Seoul policeman. |

| He didn't do you a favor. He did himself a favor. It's a pain in the a$$ to give a ticket to a foreigner. They'd have to call in someone to speak English abd tell you why you are getting a ticket, unless you are foolish enough to speak to them in fluent Korean. |

| After two years of living here, if there is one reason i hate this country it is the motorcycles on the sidewalks. |

Agreed. I'd like to see piano wire strung up to stop this. |

| I had the same thing happen to me when making an illegal u-turn. They didn't want to deal with me. |

| If you have a loud boom box playing Korean disco music strapped to the fuel tank while your boyfriend sits on the back, both of you without helmets, you don't actually need to stop for the police. In fact you should speed up when you see them and blast a tune on your horn. Then drive past them two or three times just make them smile. |

| I think they prefer it when you have two friends on the back weaving through traffic at 70 km/h with a big smile on your face. |

I was in a similar scenario as Bibbitybop a few weeks ago. There was a traffic stop set up where they were checking everyone's breath. I pulled up to the stop, a cop started to put the thing up to me, then he looked in my helmet and saw my gorgeous white face. I was promptly waved through with a look of annoyance. The funny part was I was fairly drunk at the time. (don't worry, I don't drink and drive)
Pro Tip: Do not speak Korean or respond intelligently to anything said in Korean by any policeman or other authority figure looking to bother you. If they do attempt to speak English, unless it's fluent English and you know they know what they are saying, pretend you can't understand what they are saying and just repeat everything like it's a question. |

How do you reconcile these two statements? |
