I wonder if the old Korean bag from Konkuk University will be there? The one who stood up at the last Sookmyung-sponsored conference I was at, praised Nunan for his work, and asked him what could be done to get the lazy foreign teachers in Korea to "better themselves?"
Was that for Cambridge, I think?
She basically took the opportunity to grab the mic, rip on foreigners, and blame the nations English problems on them. |

I took a look at the info. a few weeks back and posted it up on my community site, to let others know....spreading the love.
But,,,,,,,can someone confirm if what I read is true (I'm only asking because even though it was in bold print, it is just unbelievably outlandish)? I read that presenters have to A) still be paid up members (so KOTESOL gets another membership fee B) they have to pay for the use of audio visual equipment? YES it says they need to reserve the equipment and also pay a fee? WOW! Although the internet is free
Now I really see this as stinking. Either someone is just into being a cash cow or they've just got it plain wrong.
I've spoken at conferences all over the world and never had this happen. I've spoken at two Kotesol conferences already and that wasn't the case either (and gladly did freely). What's up? Can someone confirm this? What is the world and commoditization of education and knowledge coming to?

Confirmed.
I'm none too pleased about it either. There was an equipment fee last year, but it was 20 across the board.
My workshop requires a lab so I had to shill out 50 ON TOP of membership fees and conference fees. I have heard of worse- but either way I'm none too pleased.
The cash goes mostly to the increasingly expensive facilities methinks- the actual budget allocations are published annually in their "English Connection" magazine. Fair or not (I side with not) it is at least apparent where it goes.
That said all positions of the national council are being run for unopposed so I figure unless I take an active role in changing the regulations I just have to either take it or leave it (and not present).
We could always have some fun and do a write-in for you DD? Not that many people take the time to vote, and write-in votes could catapult you to the tip top....^^

Man, that's nuts!
One of my colleagues told me that there was a conference put on at his school last year and the College of Foreign Language and Literature asked their faculty to use their own personal cash to pay for the conference. Never heard of that before.
My experience is that required equipment (computers, whiteboards, markers, overhead projectors, microphones, etc., etc.) are part of the package for renting the venue for a conference. |

There has always been an equipment fee - it's not new. Things are expensive to rent, you know? We don't have 100 notebook computers in a store room and every year, we need to rent them from some company... things like beam projectors, too - we don't own any.. we rent them. We only pass a fraction of the costs onto our presenters.. the rest is covered by the conference budget.
And yes, you have always had to be a member to present - this is international industry standard - this is the same every year.
Oigirl - see ya there!!!!! And makemischief, too!! Oh and anyone else .. heh.. |

First about conference costs. They SHOULD NOT be borne by those speaking or even attending. You ask for an entry fee and if your product is good, a membership fee. Conference costs , the industry standard are always covered through sponsorship of those involved in the profit side of the industry or those that just see how worthy it is to support education and the future of our children / students. So I must say you are way off base, linking this model to any "standard".
I've never known a conference to charge presenters for equipment. My god, I've even had dry cleaning bills paid by a conference I was presenting at!
I suggest that this is just a "lazy" model and nobody in the organization wants to do the job properly and canvess the business community for financial support. Further, it may involve costs for location and equipment but this is often negotiated and with a good relationship with the conference center/site, the costs can be significantly underwritten or lowered.
I agree there are costs but I do think Kotesol get significant funding on numerous levels and it is just "low grade" to parade this conference model as "industry standard". No matter how much I do value what Kotesol does for prof. development of teachers, I stand by the above comments. I also don't see any accounting of finances on their website either, which is rather against the industry standard and transparency for a community based organization.

Come on board and be that person!
We are all volunteers on the conference commttee (as you know), and someone with your skills and ideas would be a very welcome addition to the ConComm team. |

and ConComm members get entrance/tech fees waived- alas the friendly webmaster does not... *cough*
Just to play Devil's advocate with DD (though I agree with him on most of these points)-
A sampling of Fees to present and attend at other Asian ESL/EFL conferences-
Global EIL conference: 160 US dollars
JALT Conference (with tech fees): almost 200 US dollars
Asian TEFL IntCon: 85 dollars
Philippine Teaching Conference: 100 dollars
so while I'm not at all happy with the fee structure change...perhaps it isn't that far out of line with others in the region.
That said: I am assuming Jinks will get my dry cleaning done after the workshop. |

Precisely, J! The conferences that my husband goes to even include lunches and dinners and sight-seeing tours for free.. but how much is the registration fee? The last one he went to was 2,000 USD.... yes, you read that right, TWO-THOUSAND US DOLLARS! For some blinking *prestigeous* engineering conference in Cannes, France.
We at KOTESOL only charges 25,000 won for members (as you will be if you are presenting and pre-registering, which we require of all presenters)... a far cry from even TESOL Inc.'s annual conference, which is $265 members (advanced registration) or $440 non-member (advanced registration)... or IATEFL, whose fees (for pre-registration) are members 120 / Non members 170 / Student members* 95.
I am not trying to be moronic here, ddeubels - you know me, we've met and you know I am anything but moronic... but unless you want us to charge skyrocketing registration fees, we HAVE to somehow recoup our costs somewhere. |
