So this past holiday I went out to the country to visit my wife's aunts, uncles, cousins etc. The second house we visited blew me away as a perfect picture of Korea. It was a small, shabby little farm house. Mold growing on every wall, black-arse dirty floors, bugs everywhere, wall paper falling down all around us, in short, pure nastiness. They don't even have a proper bathroom -- still using an outhouse! Yet somehow, they manage to have a 50 inch flat screen TV, beautiful computer, and all 3 young kids have the latest cell phones! It kills me. These people still have a mother f-ing outhouse, but they have all this stupid high-tec crap. Jeebus people. Talk about cultural differences in judging what is and what isn't important. Buy a fricking toilet before going for that 50 incher.

I don't know. The whole thing kinda reminds me of the Guru's "peasants in suits" analogy.

Sounds like a few Indian reservations I've heard of. At least their kids are text-messaging and not sniffing gasoline.

Screw Indian reservations, it reminds me of trailer parks back home.

I walked inside a friend's sh|tty trailer (rusted to hell on the outside, old car parts all over the lawn, cracked windows, overgrown grass) and expected to find it as dumpy inside as it was out. Of course, the second I walked in, his friend was playing an Xbox (new at the time) on his 50" screen TV, and his sister was on a brand new Dell laptop. There was also a brand new computer in the living room, and expensive stuff throughout, even if it was hardly organized.

I don't think its necessarily a bad thing. I guess I'd rather live in a situation like that than a big, clean house with nothing in it.

I went a trailer like that in the US once.

My father had shown me this really expensive video tape machine
from the TV station he worked for. The format is now defunct,
but it was really small and expensive at the time.

A few weeks
later I go in this trailer with my sister an her friend and the kid
has that same kind of machine, a C-band satellite dish (this was
when they were not cheap), and the latest video game system.

There was trash and filth everywhere and tons of unwashed dishes
and pans in the kitchen with rotting food in them. The mother was
extremely obese and never got off the couch. She just ordered the
kid to get things for her.

That reminds me. I need to clean the house.

When I was growing up, I was fortunate to always live in a decent house, thanks of course to my parents, who always made it a priority. Maybe as a result of that, I promised myself long ago that I would always live in a decent place, even if that meant going without "things" I might like. I've never regretted it.

But some people just don't feel that way. And for others, it's not a matter of priorities, but of economics. For example, there are plenty of people who drive beautiful, late model cars, but live in trailers or run down homes on the wrong side of the tracks. For many of them, the reason is that they can obtain financing for the car, the computer, the TV, etc., but they can't get it for a nice home.

Take a job installing direcTV in Florida for a few weeks you'll see much worse. The welfare pays for the TV service.

i went to sokcho and got an apartment with my girlfriend. It was nearly brand new but the builders had actually neglected to take the plastic wrapping off of half the appliances and doors! I couldnt stand it so had to rip it all off myself.

There was also a huge brand new high-def LCD but the reception was �ucking awful.
