I am finishing up my first year here and now I am looking for a better job. I have been stuck at a hagwon for the past 11 months and I can't go back.
What is the best way to find a high paying position with minimal working hours. I don't really trust recruiters but I don't really know my options.
Do have any good advice or contacts that might help me?
Thanks |

You can't go back to that hakwon or you can't go back to any hakwon?
What do you want to do? |

OP, recruiters are an option. It's not a matter of trust. They send you the list of jobs they have available and you interview and check out the ones you are interested in.
But, you are in Korea, so you have other options. You have been here eleven months so you should have a network of koreans/ foreigners who can point you in the right direction. If you do not, then your only option is recruiter or door to door interviewing.
PM me if you want a reliable job on the outskirts of Seoul with a good apartment. I have a K friend who owns a hagwon. I wouldn't work there because it's elementary school kids, but if you are in a jam, I'll give you her number and you can interview. |

I dont want to work in a hagwon at all. I hate the feeling of educating as a business but I assume I wont be able to escape that over here. I am forced to give good grades to horrible students and teach ridiculous material at my hagwon.
If you know any good recruiters or any open positions please let me know. Thanks for the help guys. |

In all seriousness I just want a good job with as little hours as possible at this point. Public or private is fine. I have been teaching elementary this year. I have a year of experience teaching in the United States and I am certified.
I have been working 8 hour days which leaves me little time and energy to do anything else. Need a more relaxing atmosphere. |

Then you should consider the universities. I know one in Gwang ju that may need a teacher. The pay sucks, but the hours are great. You can make your money doing privates.
If you do not think you can make contacts for privates then maybe you should try a public school. When you say you work 8 hour days do you mean you teach 8 hours or you just have to be there 8 hours?
There are hagowns where you teach 20-23 hours a week, BTW.
If you have a teaching cert from the US you are golden. You just need to put yourself out there. I could've gotten you 2.4 teaching at my hagwon less than 25/hours a week but we just hired someone. Your teaching certificate combined with you being a US citizen is gold man. You should really have networked in the past year. |

Try www.tenetkorea.com as a recruiter. I found my job thru them and they hire for the EPIK program. I tried a lot of recruiters but this one came up with the best jobs. But as advice try a number and take your pick. As PGF said you're in the driving seat being in Korea. Face to face interviews and checking out the apartment etc, is a great advantage as opposed to being out of the country. Good luck and don't feel as though you're resigned to another year of being overworked and undervalued. |

Really, when it comes to a recruiter, who cares?
A recruiter is nothing more than an introduction to an employer.
Hello Mr. English speaker this is Mr Hakwon owner.
Mr. hakwon owner, this is Mr. English speaker.
Mr. English speaker, here is the contract. Please read and sign.
School, here is the signed contract. Pay me.
Good bye.
-You are not paying them anything (or you shouldn't be).
-THEY DO NOT WORK FOR YOU! - They work for the school.
-They owe you nothing once you get here.
-They are not your friend.
-They are not your baby sitter.
-They cannot help you if things go to *beep* after you get here.
Beyond that it is YOUR responsibility to check the school out.
Run through the job postings. Send your info, WHAT YOU WANT and Where you want to all of them.
Ignore any who send you crap and follow up with any that are interesting to you.
You are here, you are certified and you are experienced.
The other alternative is to head for the beaches for a month or so then look for a spring start at a uni or public school. You will be in the top of their salary ranges.
