And I have no problems with that. But I do wonder: what the hell were we just arguing about? |
About how useless of an endeavor hockey is!
Certainly there are much better ways to spend one's brief existence on this planet before being inevitably snuffed out, other than batting a chunk of rubber across a sheet of ice!
For example, playing soccer! Or trolling messageboards! Or listening to the punk rock music!... these are just intrinsically BETTER actvities that have more MEANING in the bigger picture! It's just so clear, and I hate when people have opinions other than mine that are wrong!
Though in Canadians' defence, I don't mean to paint all of them with the same brush as being meatheads... clearly Newbie has some hope, as he at least appreciates the value of the stereotypes that it took us years to build in high school!

Ahhh, we're the photographer and the musician never invited to play hockey with the cool kids? Must have been sad sitting through high school with no more than 2 or 3 friends and nothing to do on the weekend but take pictures and listen to crappy, unheard of "angry" music. I'm surprised neither of you were never involved in any Columbine-style shoot up. Must have been mommy and daddy didn't have enough money to buy you guns. |
Right on brotha! Screw those rockers, none of whom play sports due to them being rockers, the inclusion in such a clearly defined group precluding said possibility! |

Don't screw em all. Just those who sit back and take shots at anything different or "unworthy" of their "special" time. Those who are too ignorant and stuck up.
You're sarcasm is lame. |

Are there any black hockey players? Don't you think they'd kick some rich suburbia white boy butt if there were?
For this reason, I can never think of hockey as being a truly cross-cultural/globally competitive sport. Just a bunch of white boys beating on each other and giving themselves a trophy for it. |
Of course. One is one of the best players in the NHL, and another led his team to the Stanley Cup finals last season. But hey, don't let the facts get in the way of the mindless bashing. Especially when racial stereotyping is so! much! fun! I'd hate for you and others to come across as less ignorant than those loathsome, mindless hockey fans. |

And - once again - hockey has nothing whatsoever to offer here. |
But to Canadians, hockey is nationalism. It is the one thing that is truly ours, that binds so many of us, and really separates us from the "other guys". Olympic hockey, and hockey as part of our image, is huge in Canada. |
I'm at least as patriotic as any other Canadian on this board, even if I don't rub everyone's face in it. Still, I hate hockey. And because I think Wayne Gretzky is a douchebag doesn't make me any less of a Canadian. |
You're right. Hating Wayne does not make you less Canadian. And sure, you can be patriotic without liking hockem just as I'm sure not all proud Americans love baseball or football. I tried to get that message across with "binds SO MANY of us" rather than saying "all". But hopefully you're not so self absorbed that you can't notice how much of a unifying factor hockey is for other Canadians, especially, those with deep ties to the country |
I guess I didn't go to a rich enough school or live in an isolated enough gated community on the outskirts of town. |
I neither went to a "rich school" nor lived in an "isolated enough gated community on the outskirts of town", yet I have no problem whatsoever seeing how hockey unifies many Canadians. But hey, stereotypes are awesome! They save us the trouble of having to actually bother educating ourselves on things. Keep up the good work, chum. |

All that snark and apparently I'm the one that missed you were just being difficult. My apologies. *sniffles* |

Edmonton is hardly the projects.
And it's hardly a place full of rich schools and gated communities, either. (Well, it's becoming that way, but it certainly wasn't in our era...) It's a totally blue-collar city, and HEAPS of hockey players (even BLACK ones!) I knew were from very modest-income families, myself included (single mother, living in a rented townhouse in effin' Clareview- hardly a gated community).
There's nothing wrong at all with hating hockey, but c'mon, making it out to be some kind of bourgeois vs. proletariat thing is kind of weak. I seem to remember a sports store (Play-It-Again) that sold sets of gear to disadvantaged families for, like, $50. I was a goalie (which has probably the 2nd most expensive gear out of any sport except polo, cuz ya need a horse), and I got my equipment free on loan every year from the league I played in.
Anyways, carry on. I'm certainly not here to convince anybody to like hockey, but the stereotype of a bunch of priveleged whiteboys is a bit off. (Well, maybe not the whiteboys part, haha.) |

Brain freeze, please help! Who are you talking about?
While I know there must be more, the only brothers I can think of off hand are Anson Carter and Emery. Aha! There's the Stanley Cup finals guy.... so, who's this "one of the best players". And is Emery full on brother?
(sorry if anyone finds brother offensive. I use it as a term of endearment) |

Another reason why hockey sucks is because it doens't have fans coming down and slapping goaltenders in the face.
Chalk another point for soccer being number 1-soccer does have fans slapping goalies druing games.
Soccer is number 1 ! |

I must've been living in denial when I was a youngster. I used to be so excited about playinig and had so much fun. And scoring a goal or setting up a play was like extassy.
Hmm. Thanks for showing me the light.
Anyway, I truly believe that it's for kids and should be played for fun. I don't like watching games much on TV anymore although going to a game is great.
One negative thing I find about hockey is the favoritism involved. When growing up to make the A team (or AAA team) had a lot to do with who you knew in many cases. Some kids don't get a chance to develop their skills from an early age because other kids are chosen for the better teams because their parents know their parents. Or some donate money to the team, etc. Eventually these kids who play top level hockey in their early years develop exponentially because they get the better coaches and training. Some, however, completely drop out of hockey.
Christ, I even went to hockey school.
When hockey becomes more serious, it becomes less fun. |

Oh Newbie, you must be a Leafs fan.
Jarome Iginla
Mike Grier
Brashear
Georges Laraque
That's just off the top of my head. |

Yes, stupid me for not remembering Grier and Iginla (especially Iginla). I would have thought Laraque and Brasher were retired now. |
