Are you at a public school? 2-3 times a week we have some douchebag just waltz into the school like he owns it, go from office to office trying to sell insurance. He never does, and he makes the same offer to the same teachers everytime he comes, and they always turn him down, but he keeps coming back.

Thank gawd he's too intimidated to try and sell something to me.

We have the yoghurt lady who is quite nice even though I don't buy her yoghurt. She wears a yellow uniform, think she's more official than the sock guy. Also had a guy selling pens, "No it's ok I'll just go to the stock cupboard and help myself", and credit card guy "Yeah I'll sign up to something I could save hundreds on just by looking on the internet"(and I know he probably wouldn't let me sign anyway me being all waygooked)

Korea needs to discover Ice-cream vans, park one of those outside the school gates at lunch time and watch the money roll in. ($.$)

We had an ice-cream seller at school.

We have a vegetable juice lady who comes in and deposits small packets of vegeatable juice in peoples small vegetable juice bags on their desks.

She gave me a free sample once - it tasted of water, carrots and broccolli - stinking.

I wonder if he is the same sock man who came to my school? I bought 5 pairs for W10,000. Decent socks, even if they don't match my other socks.

I think you're meant to wear two socks from new pair on the same day.

My Korean coworkers have no clue why I use a lock with my laptop. Too much experience with this sort of action in North America. People will just stroll into offices and grab stuff. Might not do that so much in Korea but I really don't want to test the inherent honesty of people wandering into offices to sell stuff.

I remember in North America I was working at a self serve gas station. I'm 20. Second year university. Some guy is trying to sell me insurance. I don't know if it was life or health or whatever. You know. I'm kind of working. I've got to keep an eye on the pumps. Makes sure people aren't trying to pump gas while smoking and other insane things people actually try to do around explosive gasoline. Anyway, a couple polite nos. Then the cold shoulder. I really gotta get back to work, you know?

Anyway, the guy start raving at me about how I don't care about my future. Yeah, like I'm the loser who is not thinking about his future. Your brilliant career is trying to peddle insurance to self serve gas station gimps .

This doesn't come as a shock to me. I've been around this block before.

Years ago, it dawned on me that an enormous amount of my time was being wasted matching socks as they came out of the drier. This was not the way the universe was designed. I threw away all my socks and went out and bought 10 new pairs of socks...all the same size and color.

The rest of my life has been spent trying to hide my disappointment when people give me socks as presents for birthdays and Christmases, etc. because they don't match. I LOVE being able to dump all my clean socks in a drawer and reach in randomly and put them on in the morning, without wasting time matching them up. In wild and crazy moments, like at that rural high school, I have lost focus and bought socks of other brands, colors and designs, but have always ended up regreting it.

Let that be a lesson to you.

When I was teaching in a US public school, the insurance salesmen, etc. were allowed to address us in mandatory staff meetings, then later set up shop in the teachers' lounge to peddle their product. (This is not just companies like AFLAC who have some relationship with the state...this is the local State Farm guy, too!)

Teachers with a side business (jewelry, handbags, etc.) set up shop in their classroom after student hours but before teachers can go home.

Others have free access to pamphlet in the teachers' mailboxes.

The sock guy or yogurt lady seems to me no big deal.

i've been seeing adverts for '10 danish socks' or something like that. 10 identical socks that you can lose or match however you want. i had my doubts, but it sounds like it works.
