D-war didn't come to Canada - I had no idea that piece of crap would make it into an American theater...
If someone told me Strange Brew sucked, I wouldn't say "Hey I am Canadian..." I'd say "Hey it is a low budget flick made in the 80s, wtf did you expect?" I would then proceed to tell the person why I liked or disliked the film.
Koreans just don't do that. Critical thinking? Haven't seen it used that frequently in Korea. |

Yeah, I agree. Although some people might get offended if people were like "yeah, the Barenaked Ladies and Rush and the Tragically Hip suck!" |

Say, what is vegemite, anyway? Someone told me its like peanut butter made from animal fat. |

Koreans just follow the nationalist line, wherever they may be, and at all times in the presence of *gasp* foreigners. It's almost robotic in nature.
I just saw a short clip from an upcoming CNN interview with some rising Korean female movie star. In a three second sound bite I heard the words "Korean" "proud" "duty" and "better". So predictable, and for anyone old enough, these sound just like the babble that used to come out of the old soviet Union - As a Soviet I am very proud to be recognized and feel it is my duty to stive to be the best, yadayada. Sure, your wife's friend wasn't being interviewed on CNN, but that's what you represented - foreign eyes. It's pathetic and sad for sure. If these celebrities acted like humans (at least in the superficial manner that western celebrities do), they might actually gain the overseas popularity they crave so much.
From watching the kids, I think this is changing. There are the kids similar to your wife's friend, usually ones who have never traveled outside Korea. Then there are the ones who have lived overseas, and trash Korea every chance they get. I have one class that rags on Korea so much I've had to tell them to tone it down, as they are depressing me. Every essay, every debate topic becomes an I hate Korea rant. I tell them that when they grow up, they can change things for the better. Their response - Korea will never change and they're on the next plane out as soon as they're old enough. They also insist that Koreans enjoy being rude and hurting people's feelings, but that's another story.
In any case, CNN's Eye on South Korea is airing all next week. I'm gonna get a bottle of soju and play a drinking game. Every time I hear "proud" it's one shot. "World Best" two shots. |

It's a yeast-based spread, black in colour and salty in taste. It's usually spread on bread or used as a base in soups or stews. Definately an acquired taste, but I love it. |

It's actually not all that bad, though. It's the people who drown everything in it that get too fat. The people who drown stuff probably don't eat too much maple syrup anyway. They buy the cheap crap that's mostly full of corn syrup. That's because most overweight Americans are typically working class.
Quality is often sacrificed for price and quantity. |

a) Maple Syrup is ageless. It's been produced for longer than anyone has records about, so it certainly was not invented by "Americans." I'm glad you make comments on things you're "pretty sure" about.
b) Ilsan was making a joke about being Canadian. You know, cause Canadians are known for maple syrup. Thus why your comment makes you look like a lobotomy patient.
c) I'm not usually this direct, but you may be the stupidest son of a bitch on this board currently. In the last two days (the first time I've noticed your handle, I might add), you've consistantly made numerous asinine comments. What warrants this little dressing down, though, is the fact that you seem proud of your ignorance and inability to understand WHY you look like an idiot.
... you know, now that I think about it, I realize why I can't stand your comments. For a person who needlessly brought US bashing into this thread, ironically enough, you remind me of Bush. |
