show any displays of affection in public (i.e. hands-holding, huggin', kissin', butt-slappin') ?

I've heard that PDA isn't acceptable here, but I see it among the young and restless natives all the time.

Yet whenever I (western dude) engage in PDA with my (Korean) girlfriend, we get some pretty threatening stares.

Sub-question:

When you're together in public, do you feel like a spectacle (or am I just too self-conscious?

Really looking for your honest thoughts and experiences.

Thanks.

Do you want to include "wives" or "boyfriends".... If it's "boyrfriends" you get a big Rolling Eyes from me.

It's the boys who are doing all the staring at us for "stealing/polluting the bloodline" and other crap.

Because my hearing about a Korean male and western females experience probably wouldn't answer my question, because I think society would treat a Km and Wf differently.

But if you have experience with that, please do share. I guess here is a good place to answer that question as well.

Because in Korea, Koreans react much differently to white/western man holding a Korean girl's hand as opposed to holding a white/western woman's hand.

My girl and I hold hands and have arms around each other all the time and have never had any problems. I'm still waiting for that day, though, I know it's coming sooner or later from a drunk ajossi or lonely uni student.

Every once in a while we hug or kiss goodbye, but we get our fill of that on our own.

Have you guys ever been in a foreign woman Korean man relationship? Maybe in some past life?

You think foreign woman with Korean man is somehow immune? Oh please, you foreign men are not that unique and special.

OP--yes, my Korean boyfriend holds my white hand in public, kisses me in public too. Whether we're holding hands or not we get stares and comments for it. The absolute haughtiest stare (no comment from this one) came from a Korean woman about our age who was draped on her (Korean) boyfriend's entire body but still glaring at us, mostly at me.

We have gotten comments from ajosshis and ajummas. This weekend some man in Anseong scolded us. Boyfriend just looked at him and said, "I want to hold her hand. If you don't like it, don't look."

Yes we are....

Honestly though, I wouldn't say "immune" but I'd confidently assume you get it less than men. It's men, of all races, who are the petty, childish, protective ones.

And it's the women who are....bitchy, jealous, competitive?

Cause we get a whole lot of crap from Korean WOMEN.

Altavistic,

Thanks for sharing! I wouldn't have guessed you to catch heat for dating a native guy, but I was wrong.

p.s.

My girlfriend won't let there be any PDA for a few reasons. The stereotype for a Korean girl being with a western guy is pretty bad. I am overweight, carry myself, not too bad, but still overweight and it seems that the overweight american also has quite a few stereotypes... other than just being american. Her mother doesn't want her dating a foreigner. Those few things combined can be summed fairly well into

"She is too concerned about what other Koreans say and think."

My wife is pretty/cute/attractive, but also very, very smart. We don't experience trouble from Korean guys.

A couple years before my wife came along, I dated a younger gal in her 20s who was *beep* princess mega-hot. We're talking every future Samsung salary-man wanna-be's dream online chick he whacks off to in between Starcraft matches. She rocked in a gorgeous sort of way. Man, I got the looks of hate constantly, little extra shoves in the subway, guys talkin' smack about us, etc.

Little did they know, she was no prize.

I have a Korean husband and he kisses me, holds my hands, grabs my bum in public rather frequently.
